Pay As You Go Motoring

Pay As You Go Motoring

Anyone noticed that they didn't put this forward in their election campaign? Or even announce it before the election? Hmmmm, if they'd mentioned this before, then people would have voted otherwise. I reckon they kept this quiet to win the election.

Hang on guys, don't be like that, this is a pilot scheme and it will NEVER be put through in this term, therefore there's no need for it to be in their Manifesto.

However, even if they wanted to implement it tomorrow they could since Manifestos are never followed lol.

Don't think there's an answer to less congestion especially not PAYG what a load of twoddle. I think taxes r too high on fuel too. Some people have to drive cos the public transport system's so **** they can't do otherwise. It'll hit the poorest the worst whatever they do.

Socialists my ass

I have an answer to congestion. Free public transport.
Even if it's free, it still doesn't go the places I need it to go, let alone the times I need it to go.

Public transport doesn't run from my village - I have had to hire a car whilst my FIAT in the garage; it is cheaper, else I need to book a taxi to take me 8 miles to train station, then wait for a delayed train, then have a one mile walk to work, then the same hassle just to get home - £20 a day for a hire car is cheap......

Oh for an integrated transport policy ;)

The problem with the scheme is that it stops lower income groups from owning and driving cars (some of whome may switch to illegally driving... but thats not my point), what needs to be done is to tempt people who don't normally drive use public transport i.e. wealthier commuters, people who can generally afford to keep driving when these schemes are introduced. Road fund tax should be much higher, and based more on the size of the engine, and the emmissions (rather like the current system, but with a higher granularity a separate category for 1.1,1.2,1.3 etc...) so as you approach the 4.0+ engines of more powerful cars. Perhaps take into account the income of the driver/owner of the vehicle so that relatavly everybody pays the same.

My point here is that car use should be reduced, but in order to do that public transport must be better: more convenient say by adding more bus routs (not just adding more busses); implementing/extending existing tram and rail networks; making stuff run on time more.

BUT: This can't be done over night, and its going to cost sooooo much to do. So the easiest way for the government to deal with the problem, is pick on motorists, basically what they're saying is this "we know public transport is crap, but there is nothing we can do about it, so all the money we're going to raise from taking the motorists is going to keep funding the existing system that we know doesn't work"

I'm all for putting road tax all on petrol... that way nobody can go untaxed, and those who use more petrol and do more miles pay more, seems fair to me. :) Also stuff that only does 15mpg (eg X5) for no actual reason pays more.

the problem with that is it doesn't cut the pollution. What needs to happen is people only use their cars for a smaller amount of journies, public transport should be able to cater for commuting. this would make a significant reduction in the pollution caused by cars.

This whole road pricing scheme is just a smokescreen,IMO.What they will do is say that this what will happen. Then when everyone kicks off with a knee jerk reacton to it.They will bring in a slightly less crap version instead just to placate people,& everyone will fall for it.Tis just another smoke "n" mirrors con trick.
