I’ll soon be in possession of a 1988 126p. Super excited, but I’m now nervous about it passing emissions in Colorado. Has anyone in the US successfully passed emissions testing, and if so did you have to make any changes to the car in order to pass?

Model
126p 650cc
Year
1988
What's the problem?
In civilized countries you can own old historic (definitions vary, but let's say 25-30 + years old car is "historic") car and register it (emissions do not apply to those cars or must pass according to historic standards from that period/era, not latest requirements, that's crazy).

In Colorado, only collector vehicles 1975 and older qualify to be exempt from emissions testing. 1982-1992 require a test every two years. I would have to double check, but I believe that they test vehicles to the requirements from that year. For example, here, it would have to pass emissions standards of 1988. As the 126p wasn’t allowed into the US then due to emissions and other issues, I’m afraid it won’t pass now either, even under the 1988 standards.

I’m hoping that I can still find some kind of exemption, but so far, no luck.

This is quite correct as well in the United States in most states, unfortunately states like his along with a few others have been ruin now for decades.
Progressive Liberalism like socialism/communism destroys everything they get involved with or touch. Colorado (his state) was absolutely wonderful 45 + years ago until all the transplants moved in. Most of his state are now drug addicts, criminals, homeless bums and deadbeats and just about every road now is a toll road.

I wouldn’t paint the picture as this gloomy. There’s one true toll road, whereas some other highways have optional “express” lanes. I’ve experienced a lot of tolling in Florida and other east coast states. And as someone who is in fact Polish and understands what communism really is, I can confirm that communism hasn’t destroyed the state, nor is there any sign of an imminent communist takeover.

However, I will agree that the emissions standards are quite annoying, especially in this case. Hoping the rest of this thread can stick to the topic of me being able to enjoy my Polish Fiat!

Just a thought, might want to contact the previous owner and find out unless it's an out of state car, just bring it in and see what they say, it may not be as bad as you think. Good luck.

It was previously registered in a state that doesn’t have emissions testing as a requirement. But yea, I’ll likely end up just getting it tested and see the results. Thanks!
