Hi
Got back from holiday. Had not used my 2007 fiat panda multijet for a few weeks. Tried to start it and it cut out immediately after starting tried several times before I got it running and then it would not rev over 2000rpm. Eventually after 5 mins I could get it over 2000 but it struggled. When engine was hot it did rev as normal.
There were no engine warning lights at any point.

The car had been out in the rain whilst we were away. Checked air filter and it was soaking wet at nearside end guess I will have to get hairdryer onto it but can’t see how any water could get into engine due to shape of air filter.

Any reasons what could have caused the problems starting and rpm problems?

Have you previously sealed the water ingress holes?

Sopping wet..

Limited airflow : limited fuelling

I put some grease over the bolt just above the air filter box to seal it but some how water is still getting in. Any other holes I could seal?

Also would carefully wrapping and taping some polythene over the air filter box help keep it dry?

Soaking wet air filter on a diesel is not good news. Where did the water come from? Water ingress with engine running risks a hydraulic lock and a car with an anchor under the bonnet.

Does the engine rev ok with air filter removed? Make 100% sure there is no debris to get sucked through the turbo.

Check the fuel filter. When was that last changed?

It’s dripped in from a bolt hole directly above the air filter box and in thought the gap at the back.
The nearside of the paper filter was soaking wet but under the filter is a 5-10 cm void and drain holes in the bottom of the filter box so fortunately it could not actually flood and flow into the turbo /engine intake but no doubt water droplets from the wet filter could be pulled up and dragged through if the vacuum is strong enough.

The car revs ok now about 700 rpm at idle. No engine warning lights.

I’m not sure when the fuel filter was last changed. Certainly not since summer 2014 but the mileage has been quite low since it’s not the main car, but will be getting a lot more use and mileage next year.

It's old so definitely change the diesel fuel filter cartridge. They can clog enough to stop the engine.

A bit of wet on the air filter element is more likely to cause back smoke, but it wont harm the engine.

Sucking water into the intake (deep water splash) is very damaging as diesels have no throttle valve and a cylinder full of non compressible fluid stops everything with a bang.

:eek:How did I manage to get your forumname completely wrong?:bang:
Anyway... Good to see you did not completely go over to the dark (Alfa) side(y)

Sure Max the Mito is still powered with the same engine as Dez the Panda, and it's much friendlier here than the dark side forum. :)

Oh and the Wee Little Panda Smurfette was quite funny.
