Technical P0089 - Fuel pressure regulator

Hi all,
I'm having an ongoing issue with my Ducato. It's a 2008, 3 litre, 160 Multijet.

Starts fine and will drive fine for a while it's warming up. I could drive for maybe an hour of motorway or 30 mins on city streets.
Then I start to experience cutouts when I come to traffic lights, roundabouts etc. It'll cut out, the engine warning light comes on. I turn off the ignition, then back on, starts up and can then drive.
This then happens repetitively after that, usually more so, if it's been driving for a while.
My OBD is giving me a p0089 error relating to the Fuel Pressure Regulator.

Has anyone experienced similar?

Also, there seems to be a mix up between the fuel pressure regulator, on the fuel pump and the fuel pressure sensor on the common rail, particularly when I'm looking for parts.

p0089 is referring to the regulator on the fuel pump correct?

Any advice appreciated.

I think in Fiat usage P0089 refers to the fuel pressure being outside limits, i.e. too high or too low. Cutting out makes me think that too low is the more likely.


It could be a faulty pressure regulator, but there are quite a few other things that can cause pressure to be too low. For example if the engine is developing power and the fuel flow is therefore reasonably high, then any restriction like a blocked fuel filter or faulty low-pressure lift pump (in the tank) will make it hard for the HP pump to get enough input flow to maintain adequate output pressure. One can't rule out electrical contact problems, which are sometimes heat related.


I can see three approaches you could take:

1.) Fix it yourself by just replacing components, starting with the most likely, with the risk that you don't hit the jackpot straight away.
2.) Get MultiECUscan software and cables plus a laptop, which will allow you to log things like RPM, Fuel pressure, Boost etc whilst driving. This should give enough insight to identify the faulty component.

3.) Take it to a Fiat specialist who has the tools and knowledge to zoom in on the problem straight away.

Thanks for the info.
I replaced the fuel filter and the tank lift pump already so I can take those out.
Good point about the electrical contracts. I'll check into that and see how I get on.

Make sure the filler cap is breathing, you can test it by sucking on it, should not offer much resistance at all.... Our Qubo keeps doing that and it's very annoying...

Long shot, look on the clutch pedal, has it got a switch like a brake light switch?
if so is it working and are the connections ok.
With modern systems the fuel is cut off on the over run, what this switch does
is give the injection a wake up call as you press the clutch without it or it not working
the injection may not react fast enough to save the engine stalling.

Have you found a solution for this problem? I have a similar problem on my 2007 2.3 130 multi jet, its acting similar to yours. so if you found and fixed the issue I like to hear about it?
