Right i have read the sticky above about the cinqs and am still stuck.

The water turns a rusty brown color, and comes out of the header tank cap.
Plus if she is left running when she gets up to temp, the fan will switch on and off for abou 10 mins then stop working and she will over heat.

Help please

electric fan fault?

having replaced the fan on my cinq sporting, i know a bit about this. first thing to do is eliminate a faulty fan switch. looking at the radiator from the front of the car, the fan switch is about haflway down the right hand side. unplug the wires going into it and short the pins together. The fan should spin. If it does, i'd leave it spinning and see if it still goes on/off. If it doesnt, the fan switch is faulty. They are £8.32 from fiat, part number F/46520219 and a pain in the ass to fit. Radiator removal, or bumper removal required.

If it doesnt spin when bypassing the switch or is still intermitment then jack up the offside front of the car (to get to the fan) Unclip the wires going into the fan and run a fused feed from the battery into the fan connections. It should spin, leave it spinning. If it spins fine and doesnt stop and start then the fan is fine and does not require replacing. If it does stop/start then a new fan is around £60 from fiat, part number F/46411378.

If it doesn't stop/start then its likely a wiring fault somewhere.. you'd have to trace it back and check the condition of all the wiring i suppose.. not fun!

I hope that helps somewhat :)

i wasnt offended fixit - you do know more than me, and what you suggested to try is much easier/cheaper.. so it would make sense to try that first.

Icky coolant, try draining the system and refilling it. When was it last changed? Mine was rusty brown - my rad wasnt leaking tho. Refilled it and its fine colour now.

Did you use a specific cleaning product? I don't know if thats the case, but when one buys a 2nd hand car with an uncertain history, this might prove to be a good idea because no matter how "hard" you flush the system, there will always be dirt trapped inside unless you use some kind of chemical cleaning agent. My advice regarding the flushing procedure would be adding a cheap cleaning agent to your current coolant, let it work its magic, drain the stuff, put water in, let it flow around for a while (30 mins or more after the engine has reached its normal working temp), add another bottle of cleaning agent (I tend to use better quality stuff the 2nd time around) let it work, drain the whole thing again, reverse flush it with clean water and it should provide a fairly clean envoirment for your new coolant to work on. Regarding the coolant, I always use the better quality stuff (Paraflu seems to work well) for the sake of the water pump.

Note that during the cleaning/flushing procedures the heater control should be in the hot position and during the flushing you should take the thermostat off for obvious reasons... unless you can flush it with 90º+ water :p

This proedure worked quite well on the 12 year old Panda recently given to my girlfriend

Just a question, i know obviously you have a classy Cinq, but the new front bumper have plenty of air holes for the radiator?

Another day...another problem...

I have filled the long hole in the bumper but with the big mass of open mesh it should be ok, but it was doing it before i modded it
