[?]I bought my N reg cinquecento sporting 2 weeks ago (my first car i might add)for £1200 (he wanted £1500 hehe). It had been serviced a month before i bought it, but it overheats after about 20 minutes of running. The water in the coolent tank literally boils resulting in water bubbling out of the cap. The one thing i have noticed is that the fan doesn't seem to turn on as it gets hot, which i'm sure it should be doing if its getting that hot.
Any info that anyone can give me i will be thankful for.

YES i can help sam prob with mine. Rite check the fuse box under the steering wheel and check to see if the fuse 4 the fan has blown(there r some nice easy 2 follow pics if not use the handbook). If its blown change it and c if the fan comes on now shud turn on at around the 90 mark. if the fuse blows again and fan still doesn't wrk ur fan is knackerd [}:)]. £50 odd 4 a new 1 from fiat couple of hours job and while ur at it flush out ur coolent system with some halfords cleaning stuff will help a bit its not 2 difficult 2 change the fan jus fidly as u have 2 take off front bumper etc.
hope this helps :D

Other than that its a great car, I've fitted it out nicely audio wise, now all i need to do is style it a bit

Might be a kncakered thermostat... or could be the cap on the expansion bottle... or the water pump.

Which, I don't know....

I had a look at me fuses and low and behold the fan one was more then slightly blown. I ran 12volts directly onto the fan and it was fine. I'm fairly sure its the temp sensor, but i'm gonna have a bloke who owns a garage who lives down my road to have a look at it.
The car is fine if its on the move, its overheated twice; once in a pub carpark and once on my driveway (when no air is being forced into the air intake then!):p

Yeah it wud also yes its does heat up that quick in 20mins when its not cold (happend to me) Nuron how old is the car bcos its likly the fan is knackerd. Try spining it urself i.e. by hand if it fells stiff and doesn't spin freely its knackerd and u'll keep blowing fuses trust me i kno this from expeirience.

I had a similar problem, but mine overheated in about 10mins. In the end it was my radiator that was blocked and not letting water run through it. It cost me £64 for a new radiator.

All good answers.
Andy, try a new thermostat and expansion bottle cap.
If that doesn't fix it, could be the radiator as mentioned. Could also be the dreaded head gasket failure.

Yeah thats one thing i miss having, a temperature gauge so i can keep an eye on things.
Where is the temperature sender for the gauge on the Cinq's?
I might fit a gauge anyway, i'm always a bit wary when sat in traffic.

Its a late N, I've had a go at moving the fan round with a stick when i took the fuse out and it was fine, then i put 12 volts across it and it ran fine

I've just finished fiddling with the fan. I ran the fan with an ammeter in line, it went happy at about 20 amps for a minute or so then jumped up to 40! Its gonna go into that blokes garage cos if i do it myself it'll probly end up falling off. There is a few other little things that i want sorted out as well so I'll let him do it

The coolant isn't a funny colour is it? And when you take the cap off the coolant does there seem to be a lot of pressure, because it might mean your head casket is going!

You say u have had the fan working. ok ....on the rad/engine is there a fan switch or there should be this will switch on the fan when the temperature/water gets too hot
Is it working....it may need replacing also the thermostat
If the car has over heated.... well I would if this is my car..

hope this helps

Just been to Fiat car in for warranty work....
I mentioned your over heating he says ..... the fan may be controlled by the ECU or a switch as mentioned.
He also says the fan itself may be not working correctly.
working for short time and not cooling the engine down .
The fan may be getting hot partly seizing when working and engine over heats.

ps He also says it may be the rad blocked
