Rang today to organise the collection of the Bravo 2 on Thursday.
The car is currently classified as 'unlicenced'.
It has been paid for and I have organised insurance. I rang to ask where the nearest Post Office was, because I'd have to walk to it to get the RFL disc sorted.

"Oh, that's no problem. You have 24 hours, it's the law."

I'm surprised they can't get the tax for you. Mine did when I bought the Stilo - it had a fresh 6 months put onto it as the previous owner had sent the old disc off for a refund.

Very odd to say you have 24 hours however.

They are talking ********, I had a similar query with my recently purchased car, I phoned both the DVLA and the local council traffic enforcement, who both gave the same answer, to be driven or kept on the highway it must have a valid VED displayed.

"I'm surprised they can't get the tax for you"

Because the car is second hand and not registered to them.
For them to tax it, it would have to be registered in their name, adding another owner/registered keeper to its history.

Dealers can, and obviously do, tax new cars for customers as they are not classed as an owner or keeper of the vehicle.

Dealers can tax second hand cars no problems. It does not need to be registered to them, they just need proof of insurance from you.

Well Northgate Fiat in Canterbury managed to get tax on mine without seeing insurance documents and the log book was still in the previous owners name. Somehow they managed to do it.

Not doubting anyone, just going from personal experience from a month ago with a 2nd hand motor :)

Well I've just bought a 2nd hand car from a dealer & he taxed it for me.

I don't know if it's common practice BUT as it was registured in the other persons name with a valid MOT, the dealer just got the post office to do the TAX.

Now, I guess you could argue it wasn't the person on the log book who was taxing it BUT I've sent my mum to car my car tax before so whats the difference??

Any ways.... you don't have 24hrs as you rightfully point out.

My Bravo had no tax on it when I bought it, the Dealer i bought it from taxed it for me without the problem so I think the guy is talking ******** and plain can't be arsed to do it for you...

re

they may just be short staffed as they physically have to go to postoffice for you, or do it online but then they have to wait for disc,

Anyone can tax a vehicle as long as they have proof of insurance for the registered owner and the V5

I did one saturday morning for a customer as he bought in his insurance doc no problems . I expect some garages get away with doing it under the trade insurance?
