General One of ugliest cars around?

I kinda like that:eek:.....but looks as if its gonna snap in the middle:confused:

Hold on!.......at first glance from that angle I thought that 'thing' had a current model ALFA grille on the bonnet.

Phew.

I like the current panda, could be wors, it could look like on of these :D

All good on picking on a car for how it looks... but as far as practicality... some ugly motors kick *r$e

fiat multipla???

fell out the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down... but does its job..... usually :):)

I'd have to agree the Panda isn't the best looking car, but even being fully aware of this i didn't think twice about buying my 100hp, because, as has been mentioned already, its unique amongst other small cars and has style and character in spades. I've had mine six months now and the more i look at it the more i like it.

I don't see the problem with this guys post at all, infact i like it that alot of people don't quite 'get' the panda, it makes it a rarer sight on the roads and therefore a little bit more special for those of us who do ;-)

well i think the panda, esp the 100hp, looks far better than the new supposedly wow looking 500!

ill reserve final judgement on this matter until ive seen the final photos of the abarth 500 and the ss abarth 500 but atm much prefer the 100hp look :)

wouldnt call it ugly at all

I agree on the 500, it is a nice car but looking in evo a couple of months back next to the HP it does just look a bit fat.. I can't quite figure why the 500 and the mini have to be so much bigger than the originals. Surely with the advances in car making it should be a doddle to make them much closer in size and still afford us room for the modern comforts? Or maybe that just wouldn't reach as big a crowd.. either way i started out loving the 500 and as popularity builds its just putting me off, just like the mini, and how did the mini manage to be so flippin big with so little room?! £14k for a clubman? its a mini, only not small.. or cheap, but it does have double doors for that lovely kitchen cupboard effect, are they gonna start putting wood round the outside again next? or are they trying to slowly morph it into a morris van? Common sense straight out the window.. ..and relax.

Yep, in isolation I think the 500 looks brilliant, but next to the Panda is does seem to demonstrate a fair bit of 'puppy fat'. Still, you can't argue with a 5-star EuroNCAP rating, and that - contrived styling aside - I guess is a major reason for the 'blobiness'. It's a bit like the Alfa Romeo 159; so much more stylish than an BMW or Audi, but see it next to a 156 and you quickly realise what has been lost. The Panda is an honest design drawn from its function, and we might not see it's lightness of design again...

You really hit the nail on the head. There are two common conflicts in car design: between safety and aesthetics, and between packaging and aesthetics. In the Alfa case, the 159 can carry a set of golf clubs and prevent driver decapitation in a crash. The 156 does neither of these things. It is however an original, exquisite, intriguing and coherent piece of design. Automotive art in fact. We only forget this at times because there are now so many of them on the roads. The 159 isn't automotive art. Yes, it has a great snout and an angular version of the 156 rear. But they don't belong to the same car. And in between sits a car shape that's about as special as the last model Mondeo.

The Nuova 500 v Panda comparison is on the face of it the opposite to the 159/156 situation: an example of practicality being sacrificed to style: but the issue here is that the style in question is derivative, that of a much smaller car (the original 500). I actually rather like the new 500, as although it is a bloated peice of retro, it is far less bloated than the earlier examples of this new genre (Beetle, BMW Mini) and still quite practical. The interior is nicely finished in a way that reminds me how I'd like Fiat to have spent a few more pennies on the Panda's trimming. The 500 is just not as practical as the Panda which is, as you say, a brilliant piece of form drawn from function.

In automotive history the cars that are remembered most are the original designs, like the "E-type" Jag, the Citroen DS, the BMC Mini. DaSilva's Alfa 156 was an original design. The current Fiat Panda is an original design (only the name is derivative of the classic Panda). The Alfa 159 and the Nuova 500 are both derivative and therefore, ultimately, unlikely to enter the all time hall of automotive fame.

What I like about the Panda is that you can go into a car park, and there's nothing else there that looks remotely like it. It doesn't look -wow- but on the other hand, it doesn't look bad - it just looks like it drives: cheeky.

I think the success of the New Panda lies in its well picked (measured) proportions as well as in the very usable form. It doesnt stand out and this is exactly why it did, does and will look eternally young. There are many square-shaped cars on the market (Opels Agila, little Suzuki R, Hyundai Atos Prime, Atos...) that look just terrible. As for the more "rounded" mini (should I say micro?) segment cars (C1, P 107, Aygo...) :yuck:

I could easily say that the new Panda is the best and most grown-up looking mini car ever built.

Oh, and to stick with the topic - far far far from being ugly.

Another reason that the Panda is far from ugly is because it has been adapted into so many different characters.

Very few cars, let alone city cars, can be turned into a successful hot hatch and a go anywhere 4x4.

The wife loves her little Panda, and thinks its a great looking car.

If I had my way i'd run one of the tractors over the top of it.

We, (thank god ) are not all the same.
