I have a 2021 build Ducato 160BHP 2.2 Auto motorhome. Last week I was just about to set off on a journey when I turned the ignition on and received an amber warning light (oil can with exclamation mark). I checked the owners handbook and this seemed to suggest it was an oil pressure warning sensor failure. I checked the oil level & that was at max.

Cycling the ignition on & off a couple of times didn't make any difference, the light stayed on. I started the engine & everything seemed fine apart from the oil light remaining on.

We abandoned our trip plans & I booked it in to be investigated. Today, I turned the ignition on and the light was still on. I gingerly drove to my dealers & parked there, went in to speak to the service desk & was asked to move the van. This time the light remained off, I stopped & started the engine and it still remained off.

I am waiting to hear from the garage to see if any faults were logged......

Has anyone any ideas why this might have happened? The van was serviced in March this year and has probably only done 500 miles since the service.

On a slightly different note; Given the fact FIAT have introduced the SGW to their newer vans, is there any point in investing in MultiECUScan vs a hand held 'generic' code reader? II have a Series 10 van on order....

Hello,

First of all, I'd say max is too much. The oil level should be somewhere in between the min and max signs. And under no circumstances should exceed the maximum level.

As for the SGW, check on the multiecuscan.net site. FIATs don't like the generic readers.

there are many complaints on the unreliability of the "non dipstick" method of reading oil leval
Generic reader have a poor reputation reading Fiats. Even if you have a bcm sgw i would still reccomend multiecuscan. If you have a seperate sgw module its a no brainer. 21 was a changeover year, you could have either.
It would be useful to know which you have ask dealer when next there. Is the 2.2 engine the cut off date?

Thanks about the MultiECUScan advice, I will probably go down that route. I may wait a while until I can verify that it works with Series 10 Ducatos, in any case my new one will be covered by warranty; I am tempted to buy the extended FIAT warranty for it when it turns up.

As far as the oil pressure sensor is concerned, it has been diagnosed with a fault code P0520 so a replacement sensor is on order. Disappointing as the vehicle is less than 2.5 years old with 4000 miles on it. I have raised a case with FIAT Customer Service about this.

My oil level sensor (full digital dash) appears to be working fine (fingers crossed); the level was down a segment before servicing in March, reading MAX afterwards.

If you can come to terms with paying fiat pro prices for 5 years i would reccommend it , remember must be sorted within 2 weeks of purchse, sooner better.
I think the peace of mind the extra warranty on a new vehicle offers is probably worth the extra cost of using a FIAT Professional service centre, especially as my local service centre is only a couple of miles away. It's a small premium against the near £100k cost of our new motorhome.

The extended warranty might also prove useful against any potential issues that might arise with being an early owner of a series 10 base vehicle.

Thanks for the heads-up about the time limit for obtaining the extra warranty.

@broc i was unaware of the extended warrenty until months afterwards, its not widely advertised and few dealers promote it as theres little in it for them, one dealer that sells a few is Adams Morey Portsmouth. They have a dedicated mh section and are used to A class and comfortmatics

I also discovered this a few weeks after buying my current van so it's very much on my radar now. I have already raised this with my local FIAT service centre, they are aware of the extended warranty option. The service guy said bring the V5 in within 15 days of 1st registration & he will arrange it. He said they had a load of problems with these during COVID lockdown with the DVLA taking ages posting out new V5 documents.

Anyway I am going to check with FIAT Customer service exactly what is required & when after they have responded to my claim for a contribution to cover the oil pressure sensor replacement. Hopefully I will have more success with FIAT than I had with Rapido for an LED side marker light 4 days after the warranty ran out, especially as the van was booked in for a service before the end of warranty but this was rescheduled at short notice.

I think the sensor failure at 4000 miles on a vehicle less than 2.5 years old is a bit much; I have owned cars & vans for 50 years and never previously had one of these fail.

Do not get too excited that it is a faulty oil pressure sensor just yet.......it could be a oil pressure problem . My fingers are crossed that it is "just" the sensor.

Mine too.....As the warning light (amber oil can with exclamation mark) came on before I even started the engine this suggests to me it's more likely a problem with the sensor/wiring. Upon investigation a code P0520 was found, with no other codes being mentioned by the FIAT Professional service centre. They seemed happy to order a replacement sensor.

Before starting, I normally turn the 'ignition' on & wait for all the lights to illuminate(some go out after testing) before cranking the starter. The amber light came on before cranking the engine over.

The oil & filter were changed as part of a service carried out by a different FIAT Professional approved workshop 5 months ago so they 'should' have used the correct grade of oil. The oil level was below MAX before service and at MAX afterwards.

Replacing the oil pressure sensor is a sensible first step given the fault code and fingers crossed will cure problem.

If it doesn't cure problem the next steps are reasonably easy to choose.

It will be interesting.

I finally have my oil pressure sensor problem resolved. I raised a case with FIAT Customer service in the UK and am delighted to say they agreed to cover the cost of replacing the oil pressure switch. I am glad I had it serviced by a FIAT Professional dealer as that was key to getting FIAT to agree to picking up the cost.

It took a while for the part to arrive but I have just collected my vehicle from the dealer this morning.

Now I can take it to Truma to get the habitation hot water & heating fixed. The joys of owning a motorhome........

I will definitely be signing up for an extended warranty/service package for my new Series 10 Ducato based motorhome due later this year.

I had a particulate matter sensor replaced under warranty when my Ducato was 2.5 years old despite the fact I serviced it myself - I just pointed out it was not part of the service schedule so it made no difference whether it had been serviced or not.
Important whether its a van or a motorhome because van warranty is longer
Was 2 years for motorhomes and 3 years for vans, but I think they have increased it for vans?
As I understand it Fiat Dealers don't like warranty jobs because the hourly rate is less than they charge retail customers and they have the bother of claiming it from Fiat.
So be prepared to be fobbed off, and be pleasant but persistent. Fiat Motor-home dealer wouldn't touch it because its a van despite having advertised servicing for Fiat Vans. The only one who would touch mine was the Fiat Professional Dealer I bought it from and they asked if there wasn't a Fiat Dealer nearer to me. I replied you didn't ask that when I wanted to buy a new van!
Eventually had it done free under warranty and its ok now - but I had to wait a fortnight for an appointment for a half hour job.

Hopefully I will get a 3 year warranty as my new van is a 'panel van conversion' carried out by a UK manufacturer. Apparently it is built & on its way to the converter in the UK, probably on a sailing ship facing a headwind....

I have heard a rumour that the Series 10 Ducato has an oil dipstick, how exciting if true :D

Sorry but I doubt you will get a van warranty unless you bought it new as a van from a Fiat Professional Dealer, and its still registered as a Light Goods Vehicle
It was a 2 year warranty plus an extra 'Fiat Professional Dealers Warranty'
When I rang the Fiat Motorhome Dealers they said its 2.5 years old so its out of warranty
I said its a van so its 3 years warranty
They replied 'sorry we don't do vans' (even though I remember one advertising servicing for vans)
The Fiat Professional Dealer I bought it from said its a motor home as soon as they looked inside
I replied I bought it from you as a van and its still a van (loaded with furniture) because its still registered as a van
Sorry about the diatribe but thats what you have to go through to get them to honour the warranty.
My understanding is they made nothing on the part, half an hours labour at the lower rate and they probably spent longer than that in unpaid time claiming it from Fiat
No wonder they didn't want the job

Looks like I will be buying the extended warranty then.

The have been a number of schemes for extended warrenty from Fiat. When i bought mine it was 3 years for UK manufactured MotorHomes (Mainstream only) Foriegn conversions were only 2 Years (eg my Rapido) So a 5 year extention would have been on the cards if I'd known about it in time. At that time some large franchises were offering 3yrs on Vans whilst others were not. You really need to clarify it with your dealer and if 2 years I would really reccomend any extention available, but your dealer may even say it doesnt exist.

If it's a oil pressure sensor they usually cost a few pounds and take 10 min to fit,
unless it's a oil level sensor that's likely to be a more expensive job.

Lets hope that makes it easier to find a Fiat Dealer who will take the job on
specially if you are a long way from the dealer you bought it from
