Classic Fiat 500’s have a “different” engine oil filter, quite simple and effective, however they still need attention and regular cleaning, unfortunately, it seems this one has never been cleaned from day one (first registered 31st May 1960)

It Is amazing that these engines still run with this sort of abuse, but they do----just shows how tough they are and how brilliant the design was

Further work carried out on this neglected Classic Fiat 500, the shrouds were seriously corroded with the thermostat housing plate completely seized.
48 hours in a tub filled with water and Sodium Bi-carbonate succeeded in getting the items into this present state without the aggressive damage caused by bead blasting. Science, all very clever. With a little help from 12v dc of course.

Instead of'bead-blasting, try "vapor blasting" (aka, aqua-blasting) instead. This uses a very fine medium in water (at high pressure). This does no damage to the item being treated, to the point that aluminium parts can be treated this way with-out the gasket surfaces having to be masked off. I have used this very succesfully on sumps, crankcases, front-covers and even carb parts.

Difficult to find someone in Jersey to offer this "Aqua-Blasting" service.
Try giving "All Blast" a ring---they are on Guernsey---07911-134162. If they can't do it, they might know who can. It is also know as "vapour-blasting"

Thank you for your advice, we will probably stick with convention bead blasting due to costs (getting the car to Guernsey would be prohibitive). I shall ring them regardless.

Surely, if you have the engine stripped, you just send them the parts you want 'blasted'
