Just been trying to fathom what happened to my projected savings this year. As a small business, I'm always having a look at this. My wife suggested I have a look at what I have spent on the B since I got it in October. I think I have found the problem -

Leather seats - 650
Insurance - 800
alloys (2nd hand slightly kerbed)/discs/pads - 400
strut brace - 70
cambelt - 270
rubbers - 140
rear badge - 25
mats - 15
styling - 20
road tax - 180
hood - 350

Grand total of - £2920

Suddenly it all becomes clear. Hey-ho, easy come easy go:eek:

Quick note to one's self doolahrock:

'DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE ANALYSE YOUR CAR SPEND' - it will end in tears and once the information becomes public it is likely to be used against you by the missus, also if you publish your spend some smug git might point out that you have spent more or parts than they spent on buying their shiny Red B ;)

I would love to know how much the Doc's project has cost to date.....

I think that's part of the experience. Yes, I do realise I could have spent five and a half grand on a B....just wouldn't be the same though(y)

Jon

The only thing that would drive me to a new one will be when all of the old ones have rusted away!!! - not that I don't like the MK2's just something about the original.................

Scary thought, I need to get mine under-sealed again before the bad weather sets in (after the fantastic weather we had this summer)............'cos mine is my daily driver and has not lived outside in the winter before I want to make sure I give it a fighting chance........

Cover may be in order before any more mods......

I don 't have a lot of faith in 'galvanised'. I've just disposed of my coupe due to terminally rusted sills and it was a '96 car with similar build quality to the B. Drivers side front & pass side rear were completely rotted under 2 layers of isopon and about 6 layers of black hammerite. Quoted €2k to repair so not economic on a car with 100k miles and falling oil pressure...

First thing I did with the B was put it up on a lift and molest the underneath with a screwdriver. Before the winter its due for a really good underseal. Thankfully the irish roads aren't salted in winter...

I agree with the Galvanised statement - I am sure that if they were not galvanised there would only be one or two left on the roads in the UK held together with filler and masking tape!!!

Mine is showing the signs of rust on a few tiny spots here and there, mainly where the body panel joins on the rear wings in the wheel arch and a tiny bit under the n/s/f light........

As for the underside, there are a couple of patches that need attention but thats a bit like cutting the grass - ongoing!!

A little bit of info for you here LRB!
When the B has had a minor front prang, the chassis legs impinge on the front panel underneath the headlights, breaking some kind of sealant or whatever causing them to rust in the long term. Now, I know that sounds daft but it's true:)

I know what you mean, I had a good look around under the lights when I changed to the HID system last week and thankfully(?) it looks as if its a bit of surface rust from the outside, not from the inside out..

That said my car has been re-sprayed - in a state of paranoia I took off the body trim etc to investigate and from the inside all of the panels look original and straight - you never know though!!

Someone offered me £5k for LRB in the Halfrauds car park on Saturday - I made the mistake of telling my wife who could not understand why I did not take it and buy a newer one.................

€1000 Windscreen, service and new drivers side seatbelt.
€1000 Chip re-map, CDA plus travel.
€1300 New alloys and tyres.
€1000 Bilstein B8 and Eibach springs pack.
€70 Strut brace (what a bargain)
€250 Re-furbish seats and new plastic window.
€300 KAT back lightweight replacement exhaust.

Fun with car = priceless

I'm not going to count petrol, tax and insurance, I just can't take it.......

Just went through my reciepts for the car, and minus all the silly things I've bought from eBay (probably €700) I ended up on ca. €3000 in parts and work in 9 months  Add to that about €1800 for insurance, registration, road tax and road toll, and I've ended on about €5500. Plus €8100 for the car, and €1000 in petrol, plus €1000 for parking.... In retrospect I should have taken the bus to work instead; would have saved myself about €15000...
