My cinq has started making the odd one or two odd noises.

One is a low humming that changes with speed (not eninge speed) and comes from the front left. I'm assuming its wheel bearings. I did notice when working on the car a while ago, some thick oil that could have been CV grease around the gearbox side of the driveshaft on that side, but couldnt see a split. Reckon their related?

When setting off, im told there is a slight grating noise when i pull away. I can't hear it in the car, or locate it. However, i'm 90% sure i need at least one engine mount replacing. Could that explain the noise, and how easy/cheap are they to replace?

The other is a nasty metallic knocking noise when the car is cold started. I'm not 100% but i think its just down to the engine vibrating more when cold and knocking on my stupidly large cold air feed.

Any ideas, or suggest greatly appreicated.

Cheers
Mark

1. Noise from front wheel. Get it checked ASAP. If it is a wheel bearing gone/on its way out you don't want it to fail while you're driving. Also a good idea to replace them in pairs. No idea if the grease is related to the problem.

2. Grating noise when pulling away. Does it still make the noise if you free-wheel it from standing down a hill (ie using no throttle?) If there's no 'pull' on the engine from accelerating from standing then it's probably not engine mounts. Are the brakes ok? Could be binding slightly on one side?

3. Metallic knocking when cold. Could be dodgy tappet. (Charlie does it).

dodgy tappet, easy/worth sorting?

i dont get the grating noise if the car is rolling off on its own (well, not on its own, im still inside it!)

the brakes should be fine, it had new discs and pads not so long ago

If the noise stops once the car is warmed slightly I wouldn't worry about it. Charlie's knocks for a while then stops.

If the noise is still there when not accelerating then it's unlikely to be engine mounts. Even if it had new discs and pads not long ago, still worth checking. Plus could be the caliper or something else. Can't think what else it could be.
