anyone know how i can get access to the number plate holder itself? Mainly the wires behind? Thanks

I have found out that the number plate bulb holders are in the boot handle, and it is attached with 4 10mm bolts, how do I access this?

I think you'll have to pop off the internal trim. You'll likely need to buy some interior pry tools as the fasteners are deeply recessed.

I've had the handle off and it's not too difficult. I'd suggest a more versatile set of plastic pry tools similar to these; http://www.bunnings.com.au/panel-remover-set-kincrome-5pce-k8147_p6100361

Ideally you'll need a small ratchet lever with a 10mm socket. Space is limited and the two outer nuts are out of sight (on the 500C boot anyway - don't know about the hatch) so you may have to work 'blind'. Watch out for sharp edges.

A quick internet search will give you hundrreds to choose from.

Personally I don't like using metal tools on trim, so my preference would be for a nylon set such as

which should cover just about any trim removal you're likely to need to do.

Once you've fixed the number plate light, you'll still need something in the cupboard for when the door hinge breaks ;).

I've got a set of USA made "Bojo" tools much like JR's posted that have done the trick to get that rear panel off.

I have taken that trim off lots of times and the only tool you need is an allen key to take the handle/loop off.
Put your hand behind the carpet/trim where the fixings are and pull, they come out easily.
As I said I have done this lots and on 2 cars and never had any issues.
