Hi, everyone. I am a 'new boy', both with regards to fiatforum and to driving a Stilo. Only got my Stilo 5 weeks ago - a bulk standard 3 door 1.4 Active in red. This was an Ebay purchase from a company called Carshock.com. It was a pre-registered car with only 83 miles on the clock and cost me £6,557. Had to drive it home to Farnborough from Newcastle. If anyone could give me sound advice on using the 6 speed gearbox to its full potential it would be very much appreciated (I only ever use the 6th gear on the motorway!). Anyway, hello to you all and I look forward to a long relationship with fiatforum. (y)

Hello SimmoDave and welcome to the forum :) - believe me, it is one hell of a relationship for some of us.......

I don't own any cars with a six-speed box, but I am sure there are plenty out there who do and will advise you accordingly.

Hi SimmoDave

Like Stu says, welcome to the forum...it's a friendly place and you will quickly learn we are totally mad

As far as the 6 speed box goes, StiloBoy is probably the best member to speak to as he has mastered the art of making his 1.2 return near JTD like mpg...

Cheers

John

Change early and get up to 6th as soon as possible. Its a good cruising gear. I'd be interested to see what kind of economy you manage with the 1.4. I find on steep inclines on motorways that i do sometimes have to change down to 5th to maintain the speed limit.

Snap, i tend to get in 6th as soon as possible to keep the revs low and to cruise, the trick is that in this gear if you just tickle the gas pedal you get the same results as panning it to the floor-thus saving fuel. I can usually get 42mpg out the car but have had higher.

Once you start flooring this car, as with any, the MPG goes right down.

Thanks for the advice. Most my driving is urban. With my previous (5 speed) car I used to keep 5th gear for motorway driving (or very long dual -carriageways), ie, anything above 50mph. I find with the Stilo I can obtain 5th gear that much sooner (at about 40mph) but am still reluctant to use 6th gear in town. Am I doing wrong? I tend to use mph rather than revs as I have never had a Rev Counter before and seldom glance at it.

Greetings buddy nice colour :D

I saw your very car when it was for sale on ebay.

On a decent flat road, i get into 6th at 40mph. If you want maximum economy change gear below 3000rpm, 2500rpm max if possible. Change down a gear if revs drop below 1500rpm.

On a long run, on the motorway, with a full compliment of passengers and a boot full of luggage i managed 49.5mpg, over 600 mile over weekend trip. Let us know how you get with the 1.4.

Oh, i also find the odd spank round to 6500rpm doesn't do too much to mpg, and can only be good for the exhaust.

So generally i drive smoothly, change early, but if needs must spanking the motor doesn't affect economy so long as you spank up to speed and then get into 6th quickly.
