I just took one of my JL speakers out of the box and the cone has got a crack on it. From the outside edge to half way to the middle. :(:(:(

Finally I could see the light and now this, not sure if i've managed to drop something on it or if it was broke out the box.

I'm going to have to take it back to the shop, problem is I can't find my receipt and the other speaker is fitted to the car, I can't be arsed taking my door card off again to get the tweeter off.

What would everyone else do? :(:(:(

Just take it back, if it was a small shop then they will remember you. They will only want to replace the faulty speaker so wont want the rest of the components anyway.
If that fails then there is a way of fixing it, i will try and find where i have it written down if worst comes to worst.

I found the receipt yesterday, sent dad off to the shop to see what they can do.

Aww, unfortunatly they don't have any in stock, they are sending them off to JL and they will send another. Doubt i'll get it back before the new year now which is annoying as I wanted my install ready for then. :(

Dont rush these things take time to do properly lol. At least its being sorted, i would rather wait a couple of weeks and have it sorted than having a blemished speaker now.

Hmm, I having been testing my '1' speaker and to be honest, the quality isn't as good as i'd have hoped. I've set that channel to be a hi pass filter at 60hz but it sounds a bit "noisy" like there isn't much clarity. The mid bass and snares don't sound sharp like they should and when theres a lot going on in the track it sounds messy. :(

I set my head unit to 28 (it goes to 35) and turned it up until I thought it sounded too loud/distorted then turned it down a little more. I know the signal is distorted it just sounds noisy, even if the volume isn't loud.

Do you mean that you have tested the One woofer and one tweeter?

Is your HU set flat i.e all eq settings on 0.
Have you tried swapping the phasing.
How have you set the gain on your amp. Turn the gain all the way down set your volume to say 22-25 and turn the gain up until it distorts, then turn it down a notch.

Yes.
Yes.
Not tried any phasing.
Thats how I set it up, but it just sounds 'noisy' I'm not sure if phasing would fix that. I've got an old JBL sub in a box sitting in my shed. I'll hook that up, and do a low pass filter at 80hz and set my comps at hi pass 80hz.

Maybe i'm expecting too much just from 1 compent (rather than a pair)

I've put an old JBL sub in and set as above.

I dont know, there just doesn't seem to be enough "detail" in the highs. They sound a little noisy and messy even when hi passed at 80. I don't know if i'm just expecting too much from 1 speaker? I guess once i've got 2 the volume is doubled so I can gauage a fair assement then.

But trusting my ears, something sounds a-miss, even from 1 speaker. :(

Maybe thats it, maybe im sending too high a signal from the head unit > amp because i'm running it at 28 (it goes to 35). I've got the gain just past quater turn. Maybe the head unit is sending a slightly distorted signal. (Which on re-reading is basically what you said above but in my stress of oh my god my cars sounds **** I skimmed this part)

What i'll do is put the head unit a lot lower but turn the gain up a lot more. See if that has any effect.

Problem is im testing it outside my house, and i've noticed a few neighbours looking out, i'll go test it down my local pub. :D

Ahh, gain is now just over half way, head unit set to 26 max and it sounds much cleaner. Once i've got 2 speakers in there i'm sure I can drop the gain a little bit and i'll mess round with maybe dropping the comps to running at 60hz.

Even with my JBL sub the sound is "ok". Once i've got my box in and bought my JL sub I'm sure it'll sound even nicer!

I'm very happy, roll on getting my other speaker! :D

Lol there is a lot to be said for goo tuning. The car is a less than ideal place for an audio set up, hence the need to spend good money and do all of the prep work.
Im afraid i cant really help much without hearing it. Over the net there could be something amiss or you could just know how music is actually sposed to sound. I personally dont need a great well defined sound to enjoy music if its music i like. Its dificult to gauge exactly what people mean when people get so annoyed with a quality of sound. If that makes any sense at all.

It's sounding much better now to be honest, having the gains higher and the headunit lower. I know it'll sound better when i've got my proper sub in there in a sealed box and my other JL speaker installed.

The other problem is, my computer setup is nice sounding and it's where I listen to most my music.

Also, the last sound system I owned was this -

Yeah it makes sense. Everything is subjective really and opinion on how good something sounds. :)

See you are used to horns they sound and work so much more different to tiny speakers in a car.
Then your midbass is coming from large woofers again with different effect to the quicker harder punch of your car mids etc etc.
I think you made the right decision going sealed though for your bass ;)
