where my gf works there are a few private roads and for the past 2 days there has been a guy in an old escort van taking speed readings from traffic on the road.

i believe he is doing it on behalf of the land owners.

from what i can tell he takes a reading, by holding the gun one handed out the drivers window, writes the number plate down with the reading. i say this as i see no camera or video equipment.

he then forwards the info onto the police.

a few questions:

1. is he alowed to do this in a non police vehicle?
2. would this stand up in court with no video/picture evidence?
3. can you get done for speeding on private land?

he hasnt actually caught me speeding but it has made me curious as to what the point of it is?

There are a few villages near me, who have use of speed-recording equipment used by local residents.

As far as I can see, it is just a laser gun and records speed only - let me find a link to it, and see what it says about what they do with the readings...

"the next step is to identify between 8 and 12 volunteers in each participating village who are prepared to be trained in the use of the speed gun. Working in pairs at pre-selected locations, the volunteers are expected to monitor traffic through the local area and write down details of those vehicles exceeding a prescribed speed.

Completed forms are forwarded on a regular basis to the Police where the identities of the registered keepers can be established. Letters are then sent out, under Police headed paper, to the registered owners explaining a little about the scheme and requesting that they keep to the speed limit in future."

Not sure if this guy you are on about is part of a formal scheme ...

I think the ones in villages are done through a scheme involving the police. The 'locals' are given proper training on how to use the guns, then they record any speeders and give the police your details. As far as I'm aware you wont be prosecuted but will receive a letter informing you that you've been spotted - I wonder if they have a '3 strike' system thing in place

Interesting to see what info you find (y)

This country is going more barmy than i thought. Vigilante speed cops, whatever next.

Nothing can surely come from these people. Not properly calibrated speed gun, inexpereienced use. Lots of ways to fight these sad b*****ds

I think its probably a PR thing, the villagers feel like they are getting something from the police and the police are freed up to eat more donuts :D

Everyone's a winner!

We have some bearded villagers who take part in this scheme.

Last summer I had a walk down the road and asked exactly what they were doing etc.

The bloke told me you will first receive a warning letter and if you continue to offend you can receive a fine (not sure about points though).

So yes than can do something, otherwise what would be the point of them being there?

i love it when journalists twist what people say to make it into a pun. (only happens in the crapper of newspapers sun, mirror etc.)

like if a man breaks the world record for doing a wheely they put the caption....

"john was Wheely happy he finally broke the record"

:p
