I've noticed a peculiar noise on my Tipo - if pulling away from a standstill in a gentle manner, everything is fine but if I put the hammer down a little I feel a vibration through the steering column and a sort of graunch from (as far as I can tell) near the drivers side front wheel. Subsequent acceleration in the other gears is flawless. Is this symptomatic of a drive shaft/ CV joint problem? I've wiggled the drive shafts about and there seems to be a little play in both of them, nothing too major though. Not a gearbox issue as everything else runs fine - any ideas?

Cheers

Could be the clutch slipping. Possibly exhaust manifold not sealing correctly.

EDIT: Could be clutch baring also, but I'd expect symptoms to be the same no matter how you used the clutch.

It definitely seems driveshaft/CV joint related as the harder I pull away, the more noise there is - doubt it's clutch as this one has only had 25k on it and has been driven sedately for (most) of that :) Also the noise seems to centre on the drivers side wheel, which would be odd for a clutch problem.

You can use the usual check on the outside c.v's full lock and drive in circles worn c.v's will rattle when on full lock do it in each direction. Inside c.v's are more likely chatter when pulling away hard or powering on from over run. Check the wishbones as when the bushes wear they can knock when pulling away but usually rattle over rough ground aswell
