I have been getting this noise for the last few months, like a loud whirring noise that is worse when cornering. Doesnt matter whether its left or right it is just as bad. Brakes are getting noisy when applied but plenty of material left on the pads which also scrape at full right lock and judder slightly when they get hot going down the local steep hill. Discs were replaced 4 years ago. Had the wheels raised off the ground and gave them a good jiggle but seems to be no play in them. Does this sound like bearings? or brakes? or both?

Thanks

Brakes are noisy when applied

Get this sorted as soon as possible

You will have to pull the pads out out and inspect

More than likely the rest will fall into place

Check there’s clearance on the back plates. No stone trapped and so on

A small stone stuck in the groove of the pads isn’t unknown

+1 on starting by giving the front brakes a proper clean & inspection. The sliding surfaces get rusty over time, so worth doing anyway.

There's a great guide to servicing the front brakes: https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/500-disc-brakes-problems-solutions.281466/

Wheel bearing would be a low rumbling noise & typically worse on one steering lock than the other. Unless they're both shot.

If he noise reduces with gentle braking the issue is probably wheel bearing (brakes in use support the wheel bearing).
If the noise is worse on the brakes, it's a brakes issue.

In both cases fully strip the brakes and fully clean. While in there, check suspension rubber joints and ball joints. Check the brake discs for run-out at the hub and disc rim. Dial indicator needed.

Are all your engine mounts ok. I've known engine mounts to fail on front wheel drive cars and the engine move slightly when cornering / breaking resulting in drive shaft noises.
