What coil goes in th 1981 fiat 124 spider 2000 electronic ignition, please? Can i use a
12v universal coil, or get one out of a junk car from pic n pull junk yard? Thanx 4 any help.
i Dont want to pay $80 for a new one to find out that may not even be th problem. When I got th car, i diagnosed it to find out it had no fire. So i replaced th coil with my 68 mustang coil, bought new: distributor, igniter/control module, plugs, n sparkplug wires. It started n ran for 30 seconds, i shut it off because it sounded like it was 180◦out of time.
I installed distributor to #1 cylinder at tdc on compression stroke. Chiltons says rotor is to point at #1 tower of th distributor .

i've heard fiats are to set to th #4 cyl tdc SILLINESS, What, why, who, when? Come on really fiat! is this true. ? For cryin out loud.

I Let it sit for 2 years. Cranked it over n got a no spark issue. So i pulled th coil wire out from th distributor n set it ¼" from th ground of th hood latch n saw no spark. Th coil did work 2 years ago. Now NO Fire. Piece o fiat.

1. Can th coil be bench tested?
2. Can th igniter/control module be diagnosed w a multimeter?
3.What coil will work in th 1981 fiat 124 spider 2000 with th electronic ignition, please?
4. Can i use a 12v universal coil, or get one out of a junk car from pic n pull junk yard?
5. Are fiat 124 spiders really set to th #4 cyl
@ tdc?

Thanx 4 any help.

There are others on Forum more clued up on your model, but this may give a small guide if it looks similar. It is for the Fiat 131 Mirafiori 2000 1975-1982, it says there are two systems used so check if Bosch or Marelli type.:)

Answers:-
1. Yes.
2. No. But you can check out the pick-up inside the distributor using a multimeter.
3. One designed for use for use with the same type of electronic ignition, coil primary resistance and supply voltage has to match the Fiat 124 2000 original. You could check a supplier's w/site e.g. https://autoricambi.us to see what suits your car.
4. No. If opting for a s/hand coil see 3. above and check it works before buying/fitting it.
5. Yes, if the distributor has been removed from the engine. The ignition timing can be checked on either No. 1 or No. 4 cylinder, usually it is done on No. 1 cylinder for reasons of access.
