hello there guys,
I just bought a Fiat Uno 45 FIRE which was first registered in 1999. Its still in new condition.

I have a small problem though with it. It doesnt have a rev counter so I dont know what is the maximum speed I can attain in each gear and I havent got the users manual!! Anyone know these speeds??

Thanks

Hi Drinu welcome to the forum. Where do you come from?

Not quite sure what you want, do you mean the car has no speedometer? or do you want the maximum speeds.

I had a (UK) uno 45 fire which I could quote the top speeds of but it had a 4-speed gearbox so I'm guessing it's not what yours has? If it's revs you're after I've got no idea!

with my uno 45 i used to do (when trying to get the best out of acceleration) 15 in 1st, 40 in 2nd, 60 in 3rd, 70 in 4th and then 5th for anything else.

If you stick under those speeds ide say u were safe. i do the same in my cinq and the rev counter never goes over 5000rpm using those speeds for gears and i would say that the uno gear box has similar ratios.

I am from Malta which is a small island in the middle of the mediterranean sea.

well the problem is that I dont have a rev counter...so I dont know when I have reached the top speed of a particular gear. Bushboy was closest but I want the highest speeds which could be attained in each gear. What bushboy has given me arent the top speeds!!

Regarding doin it by ear...well its not that accurate!! Any ideas??

I have been to Malta!

I have had a few cars in the past without rev counters - tbh, you should know the maximum speed in each gear just by driving the thing.

Hi, I agree with Stuart, 'doing it by ear' can be highly accurate because at some speed the engine will simply run out of breath and you feel the car accelerate only very slowly. That's when to change gear. With practice you know it well. I find that in many circumstances an Uno 45 is just as good overtaking in top gear as third gear. So there's no need for the extra revs. It is not a sports car!

Uno 45s are designed for economy so the engine has very modest top-end power, the camshaft actually restricts the engine along with the tiny carburettor. Therefore, if you change gear when it stops accelerating, you won't be damaging the engine; it has a 'designed-in' rev limit!

There's nothing to stop you fitting a tachometer - either the instrument cluster from an Uno 70 (the tachometer has three terminals on the back, one of these needs to be connected to the grey/green wire on ignition coil) or an additional tachometer of the type that screws onto the dashboard.

Ah thanks a lot alex GS!!Much appreciated.Yep that's what I wanted!!

Some time in the future I will invest in a rev counter!!

Thanks guys!
