... have you checked the timing? that might be the culprit, even if not, ive found that when dealing w/ X's, it a good idea to replace the timing belt, and should be high on your priority list(like right after buying gas to bring it home) these things are notorious, and even if they look good.....they're probably not. as w/ the gaskets. like anything, they break down over time. and being that the car hasnt run in 4yrs?....id say all the seals and gaskets need replaced. always keep in the back of your mind, no one really knows the sevice history of a car.

an update!

I finally got around to taking the head off today and found that there was some damage to the gasket on the no:1 cylinder causing some water contamination. What I found strange was how easily the head came off. once the bolts were untightened it was simply a case of just lifting away. In previous experience I have always had to break the seal with a little force.
On inspection I can feel a little roughness, or lip in one of the cylinders most likely from where it had been standing all those years. Is this something to worry about or should i smooth it up a little with some fine wet and dry? the lip is halfway down the bore. Other than that all seems reasonable with no cracks or pitting. The valves are black and sooty.

I also took the rad out and have had a quote from serck of 75+vat. does this seem resaonable?
