Just bought a 53 plate Stilo 1.6 Active. Got a few problems with it, wondered if anyone can help me with them.

Firstly, the key fob doesn't work, but it flashes, how do I reset it?
How to reset the service warning?
Airbag faulty warning, same.
Also saying engine, stop warning... what could this be...
Also when I was driving earlier, got to 70mph and the car wouldn't rev at all. It slowely died and came to a hault.
The rev counter is saying the car is idling at 0 - 400rpm... but the car isn't trying to stall, it sounds fine.

So a few problems haha. Anyone who can help, I would greatly apprectiate it.

Also here the car:

where are you located?

service light can be done with FES (Fiat ECU Scan)
Engine stop warning will say why (mine says airbag fault, stop engine)

Thanks.

The car started having throttle response problems earlier, which I looked up and it seems a lot of Stilos have this problem. It will have no response at all at random times when driving.

Going to use my day of work to clean the throttle body and have a look around the engine, fuses, and everything else.

I managed to fix the throttle response problem the other day, by cleaning the throttle body and then taping the wire up, seemed lose.

New problem which for some people on here should be easy to diagnose...
Engine will rev higher than the speed it should be picking up, maybe the clutch is slipping.
But I heard that the clutch flid and brake fluid is in one bottle, which comes to the second part of the problem, the brakes are squeeling, only when turning, not when actually braking, and they feel a tad faint compared to what they should be.
Will it be the fluid?

Yep your brakes and clutch share the same fluid resevoir (y)

That's nothing to do with the fluid, you've a bit of rubbing going on somewhere around there, best get both front wheels off and get the front up in the air and try putting it in full lock each way and turning the brake disc and having a look about, that's what I would do. Hopefully a more experienced person will come by with an accurate description of what's up

If the central locking works like mine did but no response from key I fixed this using FiatECUscan . There's a option on there to program your remote on the key separate from the immobilizer providing you have the code card.

Ok thanks people. Found out it wasn't the brakes making a noise, which means two bad things... Clutch is going, and wheel bearings have just about gone.

How long does it take for wheel bearings to go once they start making noises?

Been quoted £105 a corner for the bearings.

Yep had the battery off plenty of times and it is still broke.

Been on the phone for a good couple of hours to get these quotes:

Clutch supplied and fitted: £215.
Bearing supplied: £44.17
Bearing fitted: £45.

Looks like i'll be staying in mostly this week.

That's a good price for the clutch compared to what I paid to get one fitted to my 1.2 Stilo (£365!). How much was the clutch kit?

They seem pretty good quotes for the work needed so I would just go for it mate (y)

if you lived nr telford i know sombody who fitted the clutch to my wifes 1.2 stilo for £100 and the clutch cost £50 off that well none site its been grate ever since he wil be doing my 1.6 when it goes:D

I don't know the separate prices for the clutch, just that much all together. I'm not near Telford either i'm afraid.

Went and bought the new wheel bearing today, £44.17 as said.
Car is going into Mr Clutch in Sheffield on Monday morning for the bearing fitted and the clutch doing.

Going to take me a while to get this car sorted of all it's many problems, but i'm determined to make it into a nice realiable car. Just taking it's time... and a lot of my wage each week hah.

Good to hear, she'll be driving perfectly when it's returned ;) You can sort the key fob and service indicator through FES as someone has pointed out, you can buy the software through the website for £50 I think it is, I'm not sure if the free version allows you to reset the service indicator as it didn't work for me  You could just get a Fiat garage to do it

As for your airbag warning and engine warning these come hand in hand - turn off engine message comes up due to airbag warning. The common fault on the Stilo is the front passenger seats occupancy sensor, sometimes a quick fart about with the under seat wiring is all it takes to turn it off (not the case for me :() though it will most definately come back. You could get something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fiat-stil...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19ce1874d0

Mimics the signal the ecu receives to tell it the passenger seat is occupied which turns off the warning (y) A bit pricey though, and I'm sure there's a way of messing with the wires by soldering them in a certain way, I'm not sure exactly though, hopefully someone will come along and describe how it's done :)

Thanks for that Mark.

My brother took the car in today, as I had been on nights last night. He just told me that they are keeping the car and that there is £600 worth of work to be done.

Something about the battery was illegal.
Owner before hadn't put spacers on the wheels so that damaged the hub.
Wheel bearings were beyond dangerous.
Clutch was slipping.
Gearbox has a leak and needs reconditioning.
Amongst other little faults aswell.

Could of really done without all this needing doing.

Sorry to hear that mate, not what you want to hear but it sounds like a good price considering all that work? Brake pads and disks etc can cost almost that much at a fiat garage. Hopefully the car will be spot on once it's done.

A fair wee bit to do, but that seems like a decent price for what's getting done anyway (y) I've never heard of an "illegal" car battery :confused: Illegal disposal yes, but the battery itself??? If the battery was made for a car then surely it's legal! I would double check this by phoning the garage mate just to make sure they're not trying to bump an extra 80 quid or whatever off you! Hear what their description of an "illegal" battery is lol

Also the gearbox may just need new seals depending on where the leak is coming from, again I would double check this with your garage, would be saving a lot of money over a rebuild (y)

Have you noticed any oil under the gearbox when it's been parked over night? They could just be trying to bump you as they are going to have to remove the gearbox anyway to replace the clutch so I wouldn't put it past a dodgy garage to add something like that to the bill, not saying they are dodgy but you should speak with them personaly and find out exactly what's going on.

or better yet ask to see ALL the offending parts BEFORE and AFTER ask to see where the leaky part is on the gearbox... the only way a battery can be 'illegal' is if its not secured properly its an MOT fail. ive never heard of spacer damaging hubs its litterally just a thick washer with holes drilled in it. but if theyre replaceing the bearings chances are they come complete with the hub anyway, knowing fiat, so anydamage that could have been caused wont matter so much.

dont take their word for it tho bud if you know anyone with mechanical knowledge then take them with you. theres too many bad stories of people getting screwed over.

there should be no visible leaks of any fluid emminating from the gearbox, there maybe a dark 'stain' around the breather bung ontop of the control housing but that should be it. if theres any fluid in the bell housing the input seal will most probably need replacing (as far as i know its not a MASSIVE job and shouldnt cost much, ie less than £75 ish) if there is any leaks around the diff (where the drive shafts go) the box may just need splitting and resealing. again not a big job if they know what they are doing!
