The self levelling mechinism only works when the lights are first turned on aswell i.e if u have no people in the car and turn the lights on they adjust to that weight if u then load car up without turning lights off then on again they then point more upwards hense the reason for blinding other drivers.

With regards to MOT time you have 50/50 chance of passing depending on whether the tester notices them and if he does go home change back to normal bulbs (10-15 min job) and go back for free retest

Personlly i really like them and have been meaning to fit them to my cars as do alot of cross country driving and would benefit from them on the back roads plus my fiat lights seem to be so low(brackets broken for adjuster..held up with cardboard at present)that they almost light up my front numberplate never mind the car in fronts numberplate

how well do they light the road adam? I'm still seriously considering buying some.

With regards to the autoleveling, if the posh ones only autolevel when you first switch them on then.. well that aint too bad then. I mean, i adjust the level of my lights quite often (electronic adjustor) depending on what kind of road i'm on and whats in the car. I'm more than capable of doing the same with HID lights installed. And as for keeping them clean, i do that too - i'd say my lights are the most frequently cleaned bit of my car - and they're done with glass cleaner and then coated with rainx to prevent crap sticking to them!

How well?! .... They are inhuman! It's almost like having full beam on all the time with standard lights! Except obvoiusly they are pointing downwards. But road markings are a lot more clear (Even worn out ones) and cats eyes reflect back so much more. They say that are apparently 3x brighter than halogen bulbs... That being about 1000 lumens for halogen and 3000 lumens for HID. It certainly seems true.

Ive read the proper xenon lights level constantly while moving, by working off the compression of the front suspension. This is why you can see them flicker sometimes ;)

nah, if anything it'll be off the rear suspension.

I was just going off what was posted previously about them autoleveling when switching on.

Adam, do they HID kit include a main beam as well? Whats that like? Could you take a distance shot of the car at night? How hot do they get?

They don't seem to get as hot. HIDs are only rated at 35W so they draw less current than normal halogen bulbs.

With regards to main beam, from what I understand the HID bulb can only shine at one brightness... The bulb I have only has 1 "filament" (though there isn't actually a filament). What it does have is a relay that connects up to the main beam "trigger".. When you turn on main beam it somehow moves the glass tube itself and you can see the beam flip upside down so that it shines upwards (It's no brighter).

There are other kits that have a Xenon dipped beam and then a halogen main beam... (both bulbs on the one "H4 bulb") They aren't as bright with main beam on, and they are a horrible yellow... but the "advantage" is you can flash other drivers :p as my kit only has the Xenon I can only "flash" other drivers by switching on main beam rather than pulling the paddle forwards.

Hope you can understand that.

LEGALITY

NOTES ON ROAD LEGALITY AND QUALITY OF OUR HID :

  • Both versions of our HID systems are DOT approved, MOT approved and fully E-compliant in all safety, E.M. emmission and performance specifications. As far as we are aware these are the only HID kits on the market that meet all these requirements.
  • This makes our kits ROAD LEGAL ; there is a lot of misinformation regarding the legality of HID systems fitted to cars without headlamp power wash and rear axle self levelling ...these are only an E.U. legal requirement on Xenon systems fitted to NEW cars AT THE FACTORY PRODUCTION STAGE .
  • HID systems fitted as aftermarket accessory DO NOT REQUIRE the car to have power wash or self levelling ; even the DOT get this wrong sometimes .... our expensive lawyers did not !

Just thought I'd post this up.. It's taken from www.h-i-d.co.uk. So from the looks of it these kits are legal, and as long as they are leveled correctly then they should be fine for the MOT...

Its like window tints i guess one person has heard one thing and someones heard another and we go around in circles, i dont c why they shud b illegal anyway i mean ur seen!!! :p

What's that? :p

Look in the engine bay, near the front left where the horn is located.

There is a wire-wound coil mounted above the horn and has 3 connectors on it. Disconnect the middle one and that will disable the HID on sidelights only :)

Don't worry about disconnecting it, it's only a resistor to dim the dipped lights when sidelights are on.
