Technical new engine damn!!!

i only passed my test a few weeks ago and on friday i was following my friend in his mini and the car temperature shot up and steam pouring out of the bonnet opened up the bonnet and found my head gasket has blown. got a quote for a new head gasket and head skimmed it would be £500 is this reasonable or should i buy a new engine???

£500 is a pisstake, find a new garage. Job should be £300 TOPS and thats inc new oil, coolant etc.

What caused the gasket to fail though, normally its a cool system failure (stat, pump, rad, fan) that allows the engine to overheat and goose the gasket. You need to know why it failed and sort that, else it might just do it again.

How have you confirmed the gasket failure?

yeah i got another quote yesturday and i took the car there today and should be fixed by saturday its costing £250 which isnt so bad

Make sure they lap the valves.
