just coming home, reversed out of parking space, full lock, i hear a clipping sound like something hitting the bottom of the car, but nothing there, then a whirr, a clunk and a burning smell, turn engine off, open bonnet, yes engine is still there (my knowledge limit), start engine again, two lights on the dash remain lit, the steering failure light and the battery :(

power steering is dead, i checked the fuse, its fine, anything else i can check before Arnold Clark rip me off?

thanks for the help

(PS for those who don't know, is a mk2 seicento ('01))

One of my friends had this problem and it was the alternator belt that had snapped, the battery light staying on is a dead give away to it. Not that difficult to replace the belt, it's a bit annoying to do tho!

Donz, the belt is down at the bottom on the driver's side in the engine bay. You should be able to see where it fits to the crank pulley on the bottom side of the engine and goes back over to the alternator.

The power steering is electric on yours, innit? Might cut itself out if it knows the alternator's not charging the battery.

Never worked on a PAS Sei, but looking at the parts CD it would appear that there's an electric motor attached to the steering column inside the car, and a conventional Sei steering rack.

It must sense the torque applied to the steering wheel and add assistance as needed, I'd guess.

BTW, don't bust your PAS unit, the columns are a kick in the ass off £500 from Fiat, according to my disc!

can you get me the part numbers/prices off your CD for a temp sender for the gauge, and a fan switch for the rad? ta

Cinq Sporting - and yes, its broom yellow!

7588802 - £8.38 Temp gauge sender
7547977 - £38.13 Temp gauge sender
Not sure which of the above is required cos it lists these 2. Get them to order both in and compare it with the old one.

46520219- £6.82 Fan control switch (rad mount) Only one listed.

The prices are from an old disc but those are the part numbers. Hope that helps.
