I have a 1.2 16V Punto (Y01 model).
My car is having this problem whenever I try to brake during a fast moving, the steering wheel shakes very obviously. I've done the tyre balancing/alignment but no improvement. What could be the wrong?

And noise from front & back.....very irritating...

agre with the guy above almost deffinatly sounds like warped break discs, had this on my last car. wheel is fine untill you apply breaks especially at high speeds then the steering wheel shakes badly :( may have to get some new discs for teh front

Just had a similar problem with my 2001 Punto, there was an annoying squeeking noise coming from the brakes (even when I wasn't braking) the braking seemed ok.

However there was something wrong with the pads, some clip broke (so the guy said [}:)]) and I had to get whole new pads.

He tried to charge me £70, I said umm your having a laugh aren't you, he said ok £55. I had to pay it because he wouldn't give me the car back with the state of the brakes as they were.

I sent my car for detailed check-up (not original FIAT dealer's workshop)last week. I was told that both the brake disc/pad needed to be changed. OK..fine, I had no question on that. But after I settled all the bills and about to leave, I asked the man one more question why the engine sound so strange, then he checked again and found out that the screws (total 6 screws)thatused to locked up the cylinder head and timing belt, 4 were missing and one only with the metal pin broken inside. That meant only one screw was left to tighten the whole timing belt & cylinder head. That screw couldn't support the whole thing, so when engine was running, the timing belt hit the metal cover. when we opened up the whole thing, we could see one corner of the metal box was flatten.

I was told by the man that most probably this was due to the guy who replaced my old timeing belt during the last service (I changed my time belt at original dealer' workshop) did not tight up the whole stuff probably.

I was so fed up with this kind of thing happened on me. I did check with that workshop last time why my engine sounded so strange after I replaced the timing belt but the answer given was, it was normally like this.

So, I swear, never go back to that FIAT workshop again.
