Was just flicking through this thread and noticed someone mentioned non-branded firmware.

I've got a W810i on T-Mobile and they've destroyed the menu animations. I remember playing with an O2 demo in The Link for about an hour, chatting away with this guy (it was a slow day, and we got on well) and the animations when you moved around the menu were beautiful. Changed with each theme, too. The T-Mobile one I have simply has a white thing that follows you around the menu and jumps around a bit. It looks cheap and crap.

Anyway, how can I get unbranded firmware on my phone?

Edit: Just used that lovely new Google thing and found some answers, but if you've had your phone debranded (particularly a Sony Ericsson) please tell me how it went and any problems you had.

Oh and go for the K800i. Fantastic phone.

theres little problems as such with non branded firmware as its what you wouldf have if you recieve a phone sim free.
you may loose some network features.
TBH orange is the worst when it comes to individualising there firmwares(causing late releases)though vodaphone(sorry ghost)seem to be the most intrusive.
also recently because of online updates it can cause issues if the IMEI number is registered as orange as the update service will only flash orange approved firmwares
i remember big complaints when vodaphone disabled MP3 ringtones in the K750i only allowing users to play the bought live tones

ah sugar! :( forgot to go to town today and try out a k800i (went town clothes shopping for hols and meant to go try some phones) i really need to put in my request thingy for one on monday trying to get one before i go off on hols :p

Really am tempted, only worry is i'm used to predictive text on my nokias  and well if it would run my tomtom symbian software thingy :( cant find any info on compatability on it on tomtom site :(

Wandering off from brown ericssons for a moment but....

I get loads of people moaning about the standby time on the N80. Is it just the ones we have or are you FF N80 owners getting any more than 20hrs?

Jim

Mine goes two full days, but that's including texts, talking on it, surfing on the net for about half an hour a day, bluetooth always on, searching for 3g and a couple of photos for good measure. It doesn't seem to be any better/ worse since the upgrade......

my 6680 is absolutely atrocious in every aspect :)

how does the SE compare to the nokia in your experience Jim?

Well it is a bit of an out of date phone - compare my 6600 to n80 and yes, it's slow, it's clunky, it lacks features, it's a bit of a brick. I mean the 6600 is only a few years old and it doesn't even have 3g, how terrible is that ;)

I do often charge my phone every night, always have even if it's only lost one bar. You never know how much you'll need it the next day and i would hate to be caught without :( I do do the full discharge and recharge thing every once in a while though :)

GhostWKD.
Yeah i do work for VF.

I knew you did but not sure where.
Are you at the Banbury one? If so do you know Jemma Jackson from quality?

That Joystick thing on some ericissons drives people batty... They're forever getting filled up with crud and then packing up. Bit of a silly design really and thankfully some SE's don't have it (W810, W300 etc)

But generally people who buy Nokia's like Nokias and people who buy SE are a bit like Saab owners and like the querky things they do and put up with the fobiles like the sodding joystick....

Thou the joystick is spredding... I've an N73 home at the minute (which I've just broke the back off.. Oops. Should of read them instructions better:eek: ) and it's got one:cry:

Jim

I just don't think that they are 'THAT' much better than the k750/w810...

yeah, their better but a 100 quid better when you don't have it??

I could of got one for free in a prize (for mystery shopping) but with the panda2america thing and that it was only tri band with no compatatable memory card was the reason it got rulled out:eek:
Swapped it for a W810
So as I usually say.. What ever floats your boat!:D
