This has probably been asked before, but I can't see it in the search... but on a Mk2 Punto, as you look at the clear headlights, you can easily spot which light is which (indicator... tick, sidelights... tick, dipped headlights... tick).

What's the third light for? It's on the very outside of the cluster, doesn't have a bulb in it (on my other half's low-end model), but it's puzzling me. Do higher-spec cars have a bulb??

TIA

fog lights that don't really work in fog cos they're too high up!

Met Cognac 99 Brava 100 HSX,

Yes but it's better than having the fogs all the way down in the bumper like in the Mk1 where they get cracked and broken by stones all the time.

But the whole idea of fogs is that they are as low as possible and can try to avoid the light being thrown back from the water droplets from having mainbeam on. They should also light up the road as much as possible and very little higher, that is their purpose. :)

fog lights low down is best they light the road under the fog, if its foggy here i take the punto mk1 out with its low fogs can see good, if i go out in the merc with its fogs same hight as the headlights can't see a thing and they point down.

Exactly, it's not about angle of attack but starting point. Low down lights up the road with out the severe reflection you face in really foggy conditions (if you don't get it, it isn't foggy enough for fogs!). Having low down means you don't get this (very little fog 20cm from the ground!) and hence the fogs work. HEadlights are at the level they are so that they can give a broader field of light. If they too were low down, aiming them up would obviously not be a good idea! Hence they start higher up and go down. It is also about the difficulties in control light beams.

Dave's experience outweighs any of my physics I could babble on about so won't bother thinking about it.

mk1 fogs don't get chipped if you treat them right! Go buy yourself a decent set of covers so that they are protected when it isn't foggy, then when you need them you just remove the covers. Hey presto, no chips, cracks, scratches, or even dirt!

My Mk1's foglights don't have any covers on them and they're fine. No chips, no cracks, nothing - and it's a 10-year-old car! Who says FIAT build quality is crap? :D
