In my head
A few years before I bought my Marea I seriously looked at buying a Lada Niva, the little Russian 4x4. They were tough and I could afford the insurance and running costs, for 3 or 4 days it looked like I was going to buy a Lada! Luckily the car I had at the time developed a faulty head gasket so I had to spend my money and time keeping that on the road.

I was wondering what is the worst car you have been seriously tempted to buy.

when the stilos box went a second time, and there was a hoo-har over warranty, i went out and got drunk. very drunk.

very, very drunk.

then my love of older cars took over me, unfortunately tainted by alcohol.

I had gone on Ebay and placed the highest bid on a running, but untaxed and MOT failed and very rusty 1981 austin allegro. I was papping myself for a week as i was highest bidder and was thinking of ways to explain to my folks that the rot box outside their house belonged to their first born. Luckilly someone who was in a worse mental state than me outbid me

also when i was 18 i went looking at a renault clio as a first car in a dealers, which had it in for £3k. when there i spied an off cream coloured (well beige almost) Austin Ambassador which was £300 with full MOT and service history and 11k on the clock, not one spot of rust and very, very tidy and like new. I wanted it just to be different but my dad talked me out of it, but it was in better nick than the 3/4yr old cars i was looking at. I bought a seat ibiza instead that cost £2500 and blew up after 5 months.

I reckon if i had got that ambassador, i would still have it now. and that was back in 2000

I dont class the next thing as bad but I have been to see, and if right buy two Rover SD1 V8 vitesses and an 1987 Audi Quatro Coupe. all three were pups so left alone and bought modern cars (fiat stilo and fiat bravo)

In 1994 I bought a 1984 Austin Maestro 1.6HLS thinking that all the negative reviews must have been exaggerating. They weren't...

For my first car I was actually tempted by the 1970's Austin Princess. I quite like the wedge shaped twin headlight wonder. It looked kind of cool from the front, ok from the side and "wtf?" from the back! And I very nearly bought an Austin Maxi 1.7 HL as my first car. Probably the fact that it belonged to a dodgy looking Scout Master put me off...

So everyone has a no-longer-secret lust for Austin's, what's up with that :chin:

We had princesses, maestros, MG Maestros, rovers, MG montegos, MG metros when i was growing up as a kid, and whilst they were new we never had any issues with them, i just have a fondness for them as they were the cars i grew up with in the family and know a lot about.

I wouldnt mind an MG Maestro Turbo, they was rapeeeeeeeed

this is the type of allegro i tried to bid on. imagine 20 years on it, and a lot more rust and dings

austin metro is pretty appealing (despite knowing the rover ones sorted out the suspension and added the k series.) it looks better in my eyes and has a strange sort of appeal

My girlfriend is threatening to dump me if i get an MGB GT:yum: or other classic British sports car:cool:
