Had the car 6 months or so now, started off as a red trim 16v, clocks just turned over 53k miles, since i've had i've added chrome trim bumpers, coilies, the wheels and full respray (same colour).
Hope you all like.

Stretched tyres, don't like. the tyre is being made to work out with its safe parameters and must ride really poor because of it.

Plus that's an MOT failure cos wheel is sticking out side the arch.

Though I do like the look of the wheels, dark spokes/polished lip but too wide for the car, sorry.

Im with the concensus on the wheels also

Although the car looks in mint condition overall :)

nice clean original looking jetta, i'm not keen on the wheels but if you must use them please get some tyres that fit.

Cheers for the comments guys.

Dave, wheels are worth around £1k, car is easily worth around £2-3k in this condition, it's one of the most sought after colours, top spec model and being a Jetta they're not something you see everyday.

This argument has been had millions of times on the forums and as long as the tyre is located properly and holding air (which they do) then it should be fine, there are thousands of cars on the scene running tyres stretched way further than these (195/45 on 9J for example) and they haven't had problems, or they wouldn't do it. Stretching tyres is seen on many drift cars, if it's good/safe enough for them to use then i'm sure it can't be dangerous. I don't drive like a ***** so i've got no worries about them popping off as i don't go trying to do 60mph cornering etc. Regarding MOT failure, as long as the tyre tread is not sticking out of the arch then it's fine. Saying all this though the wheels are only show wheels, I've just sold my Ronal Turbo's and brand new ATS Cups and now got some 15" flat face wheels which i'm going to mirror polish in my normal style and stick on for daily driving as the Schmidts are too valuable to run daily!

Cheers for the comments anyway, car might be getting sold now it's finished, cinq work will be commencing in the next few weeks..

This is not just my opinion here is a PDF file from Bridgestone which shows how tyres are constructed and what they recommend are the safe limits for those tyres to be fitted to in terms of wheel width.

A 215/25 16 tyre is in ideal situations fitted to a 7.5J rim, it can however be fitted from 7 to 8.5J which means on those rears they are being asked to stretch an inch more than they are designed for use, hence outwith design parameters, even on the fronts they are at the limit. Brisgestone recommend a 235/35 on a 8.5J rim, and a 265/35 on a 9.5J rim.

These are the cold hard facts, not just an opinion based on well lots of others do it, so it must be OK.

As for legality, I am sure that it is any part of wheel out side the wheel arch is not MOT worthy, this is to do with pedestrian safety. God forbid it happened, but if someone walked out from say between parked cars and the wheel caught them, they could be dragged under car, whereas when wheel is covered by a wheel arch they are most likely to be deflected away from car.

I personally would not like to be in the position of defending myself in a court of law if something like that happened.

I do like the euro look, and tbh near on every VW will hold a higher residual value than most cars their age... not a fan of the jetta myself but its tastefully modded. im wanting a scirocco if it has to be a VW

Looks beautiful!!! Huge Jetta fan and that looks ace! Modernlines are one of my all tme fave wheels and the Stretch is awesome.

Only an MOT failure if the tread protrudes from the arch as much rim can stick out as you like, Hence why people stretch styres.

Car does look good, and I like the dark centres and polished rims of the wheels. (y)

£1K for wheels!

And a G reg Jetta GTi for £2-3K? Can't see that myself, sorry. Decent 16v mk2 Golfs are only going for around £1.5K and 8valves for considerably less. My mate just sold an H reg 8v Golf GTi (5 door though), 88K on the clock, very good condition, history, BBS alloys etc. for the princely sum of £700.

The Jetta was never popular when new and is still not as sought after as a 3 door Golf GTi. Ironically the opposite is true in the USA where the Jetta outsold the Golf (Rabbit!) by a huge margin. In the VW scene it may have slightly more fans, but the average person would go for the practical hatchback every time.

As for the stretched tyres, personally I wouldn't do it. As has been mentioned their legal status are very questionable and the safety factor could have serious implications. I for one would not want to cause an accident and be involved in a test case over stretched tyres.

Other than that the car looks great!

Aaron, I'm with you there, fair play for your argument. The Modernlines are most popularly built up in this spec and everyone I know that has them runs these tyres, I drove to Guildford and back last night (country lanes and motorway driving) and they performed well BUT I would not like to stand up in court over stretched tyres so as I say they are coming off as i picked up some spare wheels which i'm going to make tasty, then run these for shows.

The wheels didn't cost me that, I would never pay that for wheels as I'm used to paying £200 max for fiat wheels! I just bought them cheap, got new dishes, bolts and refurbed them and in this condition the going rate for these is £1k :)

Regarding prices of the car, I've just sold a completely standard Mk2 Jetta 1.6 (not sought after model) for £995 with nearly double the miles than this. Good condition Golf GTi's go for between £1.5k-3k generally on the scene. This being a Jetta (more desirable to some as they're not as common as golfs), having 53000 miles on the clocks, GTi 16v (top spec model), fresh from a full respray in debatably the best VW colour and having sought after and very rare chrome trim bumpers and 7 slat grille is worth roughly that sort of money.

Cheers for the comments though guys, good to see it's liked.

No worries Craig, I wasn't trying to put a damper your work, just trying to warn you on dangers of driving a car that is asking some parts to perform beyond there remit.

I know from being in a fatal car accident that they check absolutely everything on a car, and I believe that in a serious accident those wheels would leave the driver in a vulnerable position in terms of liability.

It never ceases to amaze me what folk will pay for IMHO not great old cars, I remember when you could buy a Jetta GTi when they were about 5 years old for about a grand, never mind more than that now a further 10 years later, madness, they were very unpopular new, hence why they didn't sell many and therefore rare now. Though my Dad had this shape of Jetta some 15years ago, sure it a was a 1.8L GL. The Jetta by virtue of its better aerodynamic shape has a slightly higher top end than the equivalent Golf as hatch backs are never that efficient as the air goes over the back of the roof.

A mate of mine bought a MK2 Golf GTi 8V with only 50K on it, 2 owners from new about 5 years back for £600 with 12months MOT and 8 months tax as he needed a cheap run about. Maybe the fact its registration was G 666 something put others off having the sign of the devil on it :D

Always good though to spread your wings and get to know other scenes and car model/makes increases your overall knowledge.

Well thats one nice jetta!! I know this man swaps his wheels round almost daily.. If he says they are for show than thats cool although you see stretched tyres all the time i'm suprised how many people jumped on them. TBH though, i think i seen this car on about 5 or 6 different sets of rims so it won't be long til they swap again lol..

Keep up the good work chief and get on the tub immediately ;)

I love it mate :D As for the wheels mate good choice...and a far more sensible choice compared to my mates Golf 10x14 rear and 9x14 fronts!

It it aint scrubbin it aint dubbin...;)
