Tipo (Classic) My Tipo 2.0 i.e Sedicivalvole

Red Tipo 16v

Introduction

Wait, let me just type that out again-

MY Tipo 2.0 i.e Sedicivalvole 🥰

I can’t quite believe it, as I have been obsessed with these since I was about 10 years old.

Let’s get the headlines out of the way-

89,500 miles, MOT until April, expensive tax compared to the Punto, fantastic noise- January 1993 so ULEZ complaint up here in Scotland.

This was on eBay watchlist for a wee while and I kept getting emails suggesting the seller was accepting offers, so after a few messages were exchanged it was bought. I got it far cheaper than it was originally listed for, and he was happy it was going to someone who is going to look after it.

It was picked up from derby 8am yesterday and delivered to me in Dundee at 5:45 last night. Poor driver’s water pump expired on his transit recovery truck so he had to change it in euro car parts car park in the snow. He had a bit of a bad day.

So the car- it’s fine. It’s in no way perfect as you would expect from a 32 year old Fiat with 11 owners, and there are quite a few jobs to do, but this is my forever car and I have plenty time to sort everything.

I gave it a very quick wash today as it was covered in salt from the journey up. There are a few little marks, and a bit of rust at the bottom of the quarter light windows on the back doors but all Tipo’s do that. It has been painted before and could benefit from a good deep polish which I will do, and have the bumpers a quick going over with owatrol, but will go over them again to bring them up.

Good bits- it’s been lowered around 30mm and drives very good, sits lovely too. It also has the standard, very valuable alloys which are in good condition for diamond cut wheels, with brand spanking new kumho’s.

Once it’s warm, it drives brilliant, and sounds awesome. It’s surprisingly quick- much faster feeling than my xc40 which is also a 2.0 with 150bhp, but in turbo diesel form.

It has also come with genuine Tipo Abarth accessory mats, and a stoplock.

The headlight wipers work, they are very random but they do work but are missing try the piping for the fluid, and the electric sunroof works too.

Bad bits- it really doesn’t like to idle when cold. It keeps cutting out. The window regulator on the passenger door is broken but the seller kindly provided 2 replacements. The headlining is manky, there is no radio and the wires have been chopped by some chimp, and the custom stainless exhaust is on the wonk so that’ll need straightened out.

The red stripes around the bumpers and skirts have shrunk a bit so need replacing at some point too.

Also someone has in the past put a bit spoiler onto it (which I don’t think does anything for it and ruins the back profile) and have fitted it by screwing into the window rubber.

There are a few electrical issues with things that don’t quite work but will work through fuses and bulbs over the winter. (The rear indicators are very dim I think so bad earth maybe?)

The Fiat badge on the front grille has been changed to black so will be going back chrome, and there are a few stickers/ badges dotted around that look ****.

The biggest problem by far however is that it’s too old to be listed on fiats system for parts numbers. I used to work for Fiat and asked ex colleagues to have a look at the history and nothing comes up for type 160 tipo’s anymore. Replacement parts will be like hens teeth too, so getting this into the same shape as my Punto is, will be a long, stressful and expensive road.

But how many people can say that have bought their dream car (I know it’s just an old tipo but I’m not wired up right obviously)

It’ll basically be going back to standard, except the suspension and exhaust, and if I get it anywhere near the condition of the Punto I’ll be a happy man. At least I own one now.

Talking of the Punto, that’s in storage now and unfortunately it has to go, so that will be up for sale soon 😞

If anyone wants it, message me.

Thanks

Simon
Today, I took the car to the garage, before the tax runs out at the end of the month.

as soon as I started it, things started to come over all Italian, in that, while I had no warning lights on the dash, the car thought it was doing 165mph, as the speedo needle shot right up. Once it cut out (dodgy idle when cold- more on that in a bit) and restarted, the speedo would settle and shoot past 160 again 👍

then it just sort of started working itself.

had it up on the ramps and I’m delighted to say, it’s 100% solid and needs no welding- in fact it’s very clean I’ve been told and has obviously been well looked after in the past. It just needs a couple of small bits-

1. New idle control valve. I suspected this, and took it off and cleaned it. No difference. We found a metal bung shoved in one of the rubber pipes, and now it idles with a bit more revs, but hunts for idle. I’m hoping that when I start it cold tomorrow, it won’t cut out.

2. Needs a new centre to rear section of the exhaust. It’s blowing a wee bit with rust pinholes but isn’t worth welding so will find a replacement 🤞

3. oil cooler pipes are shot. Luckily this is the cause of the oil leak and not the actual engine

4. drivers side front brake pipe will need done

5. now fixed but one of the leaks was coolant where a jubilee wasn’t attached properly.

the car however on the whole is mint underneath. The guys who looked under it know alfas, Lancia fiats etc and said the subframe has either been replaced at some point of has been treated as it’s one of the cleanest they have seen.

so just a case of piling parts for mot in April. Overall I’m happy and relieved.

That's very reassuring isn't it, 🙂

My 1990 diesel failed an MOT on the front subframe, the garage were going to plate it, but I suspected it was already twisted / deformed, so got another from a donor 1.4

My later 95 td, it actually collapsed in use, the local Coupe man replaced it (same subframe..)

Basically rainwater is ducted into it from the screen, and the water just sits in the cavities.

Your indoor storage should stop that 👍

Yeah I am relieved, the rust was my biggest worry.

Have been on eper and I am now armed with a list of part numbers for parts no longer available 🙈

I have however found out the idle control valve is the same one used on a 2.0 ford cosworth engine in a sierra and escort. Luckily no ford tax on them

and the bumper stripes didn’t bond to the plastic so need to think of another way to attach them.
Get some panel wipe from an auto paint specialist. give the bumpers a really good clean down with the panel wipe. It is likely that they're well coated in back to black and other bumper restoration chemicals most of which contain silicon which just makes everything slippery.

That’s exactly what I thought and actually tried. It did stick, but it wouldn’t survive a jet wash.
I’ve asked my old work to order some clips for me from Italy to see if they actually arrive.
If not, Italian internet stocks them but they are very expensive to post

My MK1 Punto back in the day used to max out the rev counter from time to time during driving, it would just whip round to 8000rpm for a while and then drop back to the actual engine speed, never got to the bottom of it, just a trait of it being italian

So, Fiat are able to supply the clips still to reattach the bumper stripe, amazingly.
Unamazingly, every other part number I gave them is exhausted, as I assumed.

It means I now need to get learning Italian
I got some bits for my Cinq Sporting from a place in Cyprus (FM auto parts), so they will have at least RHD specific parts and speak good English. The couple of Italian places I have used conversed in English too and it didn't seem like a Google translate conversation.

Parts have started arriving, and have been an absolute pain to get. These pipes should fix the leak from the oil cooler. They are universal ones as Fiat ones are non exist anywhere in the world.

also, the exhaust- what a bastard to source, but I think I have found one for a 16v Tipo. Plenty for a 1.4/1.6 and 1.8 but don’t fit on the 2.0. I Had a look into getting a stainless one made but it was going to be £800 🤦and I’d rather have a standard exhaust on it as I’d like it quiet. For now all I can find is a middle section so the stainless back box will have to stay for now.

also still trying to source an idle control valve that isn’t Chinese- and failing. More to come as and when…..

I emailed Ragazzon in Italy to see if they still produce a cat back system for my Cinquecento Sporting and the reply was a "no we stopped making that a long time ago".. Shame as I have one of their cat back systems on my 595 Comp.
Anyway I went down the route of having a stainless Powerflow cat back system fitted to the Sporting. It wasn't too bad considering. About £500, made to measure, decent welds and it sounds lovely. Unlike what was on there before, which sounded like a wet fart.
Why don't you see if there are any local Powerflow dealers to you? Might be cheaper than £800 and you can tell them exactly what you want and they do it.

I have a Powerflow place about half an hour away. I emailed them 2/3 days ago and have heard nothing back yet, which is why I’m holding off buying the standard one.

I want to change the back box at some point anyway, as I don’t like how the tip comes out on an angle, but that can be done for their down the line. Main thing is MOT pass in April.

Funny, was it via the Powerflow website?
If so I did the same and no response. So I just called the garage that was listed on the website and they were really helpful.
Had to go in so they could measure up and then went back a couple of weeks later to get the exhaust fitted.
That was near Portsmouth - so a fair few miles from you! 🤣
