Tipo (Classic) My Tipo 2.0 i.e Sedicivalvole

Red Tipo 16v

Introduction

Wait, let me just type that out again-

MY Tipo 2.0 i.e Sedicivalvole 🥰

I can’t quite believe it, as I have been obsessed with these since I was about 10 years old.

Let’s get the headlines out of the way-

89,500 miles, MOT until April, expensive tax compared to the Punto, fantastic noise- January 1993 so ULEZ complaint up here in Scotland.

This was on eBay watchlist for a wee while and I kept getting emails suggesting the seller was accepting offers, so after a few messages were exchanged it was bought. I got it far cheaper than it was originally listed for, and he was happy it was going to someone who is going to look after it.

It was picked up from derby 8am yesterday and delivered to me in Dundee at 5:45 last night. Poor driver’s water pump expired on his transit recovery truck so he had to change it in euro car parts car park in the snow. He had a bit of a bad day.

So the car- it’s fine. It’s in no way perfect as you would expect from a 32 year old Fiat with 11 owners, and there are quite a few jobs to do, but this is my forever car and I have plenty time to sort everything.

I gave it a very quick wash today as it was covered in salt from the journey up. There are a few little marks, and a bit of rust at the bottom of the quarter light windows on the back doors but all Tipo’s do that. It has been painted before and could benefit from a good deep polish which I will do, and have the bumpers a quick going over with owatrol, but will go over them again to bring them up.

Good bits- it’s been lowered around 30mm and drives very good, sits lovely too. It also has the standard, very valuable alloys which are in good condition for diamond cut wheels, with brand spanking new kumho’s.

Once it’s warm, it drives brilliant, and sounds awesome. It’s surprisingly quick- much faster feeling than my xc40 which is also a 2.0 with 150bhp, but in turbo diesel form.

It has also come with genuine Tipo Abarth accessory mats, and a stoplock.

The headlight wipers work, they are very random but they do work but are missing try the piping for the fluid, and the electric sunroof works too.

Bad bits- it really doesn’t like to idle when cold. It keeps cutting out. The window regulator on the passenger door is broken but the seller kindly provided 2 replacements. The headlining is manky, there is no radio and the wires have been chopped by some chimp, and the custom stainless exhaust is on the wonk so that’ll need straightened out.

The red stripes around the bumpers and skirts have shrunk a bit so need replacing at some point too.

Also someone has in the past put a bit spoiler onto it (which I don’t think does anything for it and ruins the back profile) and have fitted it by screwing into the window rubber.

There are a few electrical issues with things that don’t quite work but will work through fuses and bulbs over the winter. (The rear indicators are very dim I think so bad earth maybe?)

The Fiat badge on the front grille has been changed to black so will be going back chrome, and there are a few stickers/ badges dotted around that look ****.

The biggest problem by far however is that it’s too old to be listed on fiats system for parts numbers. I used to work for Fiat and asked ex colleagues to have a look at the history and nothing comes up for type 160 tipo’s anymore. Replacement parts will be like hens teeth too, so getting this into the same shape as my Punto is, will be a long, stressful and expensive road.

But how many people can say that have bought their dream car (I know it’s just an old tipo but I’m not wired up right obviously)

It’ll basically be going back to standard, except the suspension and exhaust, and if I get it anywhere near the condition of the Punto I’ll be a happy man. At least I own one now.

Talking of the Punto, that’s in storage now and unfortunately it has to go, so that will be up for sale soon 😞

If anyone wants it, message me.

Thanks

Simon
A couple more updates, with plenty to come.

Original grundig radio arrived today, popped that in the hole just now. Need to find a wiring loom out of a scrap Tipo so I can make it work. (If anyone has one, message me please)
Also ordered a set of period correct number plates which I can’t wait to get fitted as I think they will transform the car.

Today I also managed to finally get access to ePer with my chassis number which reveals something about the car-

The build date of my car was 21/10/1991.
The Tipo sedicivavole was launched in the uk February 1992, but my car wasn’t registered until 29/01/1993.

So it basically was unregistered for a year, which is strange as there were only 500 cars imported to the UK.

But it seems my car is a mega early example. I tried emailing Fiat CS but have been directed to stellantis heritage hub in Italy so not holding out much hope finding anything out.

Surprised it stood around for a year, I think, where I worked, we sold our allotted 16v’s in the first couple of months.

A few more wee bits done today on the car-

My older style replica plates arrived. I wanted the old style font with some sort of period correct Fiat logo at the bottom so had these made up and fitted them.
Also charged the battery right up and treated the leather on the steering wheel to leather cleaner and conditioner.

An owner in the past had painted the Fiat slats on the front grille Matt black, and I want it as close to original as possible, so I took it all apart and painted them Matt silver for just now.
In my opinion, the front of the car looks much better and less chavved up if that makes sense?

I’ll need to look out for a set of correct chrome slats, but like everything else, unobtainable unless from Italy with stupid postage costs.

Always like period plates, how it should look 👍🏻

So this is starting to go down the slippery slope that the Punto did……

Managed to find a set of new old stock rear mudflaps from Spain today, so jumped on them. When they will arrive, who knows?

I have a single Tipo mk1 front mudflap in my garage in my parts haul and I offered it up to the car and it wouldn’t fit the 16v due to the side skirts, plus it’s low and would be dragging the ground so no point finding/ ordering a new pair.

Im off for nearly 3 weeks over Christmas so plenty parts will be arriving to fit 👍

Feeling a bit disheartened with the car today.
thought I’d tackle a couple of simple little tasks. Changing the headlamp, fitting the mudflaps and replacing the red stripes on the bumpers.
it seems one or more of the previous owners weren’t sympathetic towards the car and I’m now finding bodges. The headlamp and indicator come out as a complete unit, and someone had used mastic to glue the indicator unit to the headlamp. While I was in there I found that the washer piping for the headlamp wipers had been cut and blocked to stop it leaking out.
the genuine rear mudflaps were a pain to fit and the bumper stripes didn’t bond to the plastic so need to think of another way to attach them.
oh also it pissed itself. Oil over the garage floor
Italian cars 🤦

Wee bit of work on the tipo today while I’m meant to be working. The trims that are above the rear side windows have gone all tipo and flaked- most tipo’s seem to do this- even my dads 1989 one when he had it in 1992, so I whipped them off, took them into work and rubbed down and painted them today.

another little job ticked off ✔️

I wasn’t happy with the quick job I done on the front badge as it was just Matt aluminium paint I had, so I ordered a sample of chrome wrap and set about it today.

also fitted my replacement indicator and test polished the grille and a patch on the roof. The paintwork is pretty poor on the car but I’m surprised at how well it’s come up on the bit I’ve tested so that’s a job for the Christmas break.

I’m a lot happier with the chrome front slats now

So, just a wee update from the last.

The 3m tape I bought for the bumper stripes didn’t work, it just didn’t want to bond to the textured plastic. I then discovered that the bumper stripes hadn’t shrunk as I originally thought- it was the end pieces that were broken. So I actually didn’t need to remove it and break the fragile 33 year old clips. I popped into Fiat this morning armed with part numbers to find that NLA to order, as I suspected but are available from Italy online, but the postage is eye watering and then I’ll get hit with tax 🙈

also, while I’ve been off, I’ve been polishing a panel at a time. It’s nowhere near perfect, as mentioned before the car has been painted, but it’s about 75% better than what it was. The photos were deceptive- parts of the car were dull and it had been machine polished before and was all marred etc but it has come up surprisingly well. A respray can wait a wee while as it’ll do for now.

I tried to remove the rear spoiler, as some fud has used self tappers to secure it into the window rubber- again NLA so refitted it again properly.

also, Monday if the weather is ok, it’s going to a good friend of mine who owns a Fiat/ Alfa specialist to get it up on the ramps and see what it’s like underneath. I’m nervous about this, but it’s only done approx 40 miles since it’s last MOT in April so who knows that will appear.

have a couple of pics as I moved it over in the garage- the driver side hasn’t been polished yet, passenger side, bonnet, roof boot lid have.

i love the way it sits, not too low- just right
