NOOOOOO O O O o o o o oooooooooo ............

Little bugger in a pedal go-kart was flying up and down the road in front of my house yesterday when another neighbours dog sprinted after him, the kid, being quite scared of dogs, tried to make his getaway by pedalling the contraption straight into my 2003 red stilo's passenger door.

Go kart survived, the driver wouldnt have had i been at home, the passenger door suffered an angular dint about 3 inches long and half an inch deep just 4 inches below the black plastic thingy that runs along the door, i hope it was his head that put it there.

While the neighbour who "owned" the little muppet was kind enough to point out it was her spawn that had put it there, i am sorely hurt to find out that its not a simple fix, it involves a total door respray once the dent is beaten out. Price €150 (bout £110). Now this was a quote by the towns local dent fixer bloke, very good at his job however im heading up to fiat to see how much they will fleece me (it will probably involve taking a pound of my flesh) for the same job... im scared that the local lad wont be able to match colors with the rest of the car, but thats his job isnt it i hear you say, well yes but heres the question im looking you to answer....

Would you trust the local bloke or would you pay out by leaving it in the dealers service yard and possibly paying more than €150... would you think Mr.Local will be able to do it (he is good, he fixed my dads Marea's rear boot door) or do you think FIAT would make a better job... its a whole door respray after all and they should have the proper paint and laquer... :bang:

I realise that!!!

Im more concerned about which place to bring it to than with who pays, they will pay for it though.

I'd take it to the local bloke personally. You will approve the work before paying for it anyway so if your not happy he can sort it!
In my experience Fiat are crap and local people take more care as they rely on word of mouth!

A Fiat dealer will oftern use a Local "smart" Repairer like chips away and Add a 3000% margin.

I have a mate who owns a chips away franchise, Its shocking what dealers add to your bill!!!

Well the paints not broken, its a very small dent, but i was told that its not a simple matter of pulling it out, they said that the door needs removing and respraying when complete... i must post a picture of it here...

It might be a case of taking off the door, and then taking it apart to get to push the dent out. And then the reverse to put it back together again. That's a lot of labour. Repainting the door at the same time doesn't take much more effort, so to avoid any possible future problem it would be done. Of course, if it could be pulled out it could save a lot of hassle.

What about all the sensors etc, id hope this local lad will be able to strip re-assemble my door competently and not leave something broken... ummm im just being paranoid now....

A friend of mine owns a dent removal / small job respraying place. I've helped him out over weekends (delivering finished cars, not removing dents) and picked up on how everything works.

Your local dent fixer and your local Fiat dealer are going to do the same thing... there is a colour code on the inside of your engine bay with a alpha-numeric code. The colour of your car is matched using this code, not holding a colour chart up to the car and trying to match it by looking at it.

The equipment my friend uses is a pc with an application on it where you select the make and model, and then type the code in... it then tells you how much of each colour to mix (using a scale that is connected to the pc it actually mixes it for you).

What I am getting at is that either your Fiat dealer is going to send your car away to be fixed, or they are going to have to mix the paint and then spray it... they won't keep a tin of the colour somewhere in a store room and use it as needed... they too have to mix it.

If your local bloke has the equipment and know-how to mix the colour properly... I would take it to him. As stated in another post, painting is his speciality, and he should take pride in his work... where the Fiat dealer specialises in the car itself... rarely in the painting of the car.

Go pay the local bloke a visit and ask him things like how he mixes the paint to get the right colour, and also how he knows which colours to mix. If he removes something like the fuel cap and sends it to some other place where they match the colour with the eye... I wouldn't take it to him. If he doesn't mix the paint himself (which could be the case), make sure the place that mixes the paint for him, uses the colour code. This way the colour will be as close to a match as you can get.

On another note:
If the paint wasn't broken, and there is only a dent in the door... take your car to a paintless dent removal place for a quote. It is usually cheaper, and the fact that they don't respray the door, assures you that the colour will match :)
These days they push dents out using special stainless steel rods that are bent in a certain fashion. (They rarely pull them out). The tool is inserted through a hole on the side of (in your case) the door, and the dent is gently pushed out.
Check out this site for pics of the tools: http://www.topoftheline.com/paindenrep.html

They look like something you would find at a dentist's office :p

Sorry for the long post, but I hope it is usefull info...

I've got a couple of stone scratches high up on my door. They've been there for about a year, and have a slight layer of rust (or at least they're rusty in colour. Would the chips away people still be able to work their magic? I'm only interested in stopping further rust, I don't really care about the looks. I must confess, I've tried to ignore it for the last year. :(

The paints not broken, but i was told that if the dent is just popped out and the door left as is, it will leave the paint over that little patch weaker than the rest of the doors paint and it will be prone to getting broken up quicker than the surrounding paint over time.

Quick question, my stilo is standard red 1.2 with black trim, is it a big deal to get mirrors and existing trim along door, handles and bumper strips sprayed red, or do i need to buy special trims made from different plastic that can be sprayed???

I believe the plastic just needs to be prepped poperly, then you can have it sprayed. You don't need "special" plastic. If you are getting the door resprayed in any case, then it should work out cheaper to do everything at once. (As I am sure that is your thinking. ;) )

sure is, im sure my stilo would look cool if it was ALL red and the spray job was good )

:yeahthat: Let us know how it goes...
BTW do you have any pics of the dent? If so, why not post it?

Just got my stilo back from Loacal guy, 150 euro and he did a good job too.

FIAT Barrable Motors on Feltrim Road wanted FOUR HUNDRED EURO'S
400...
F O U R!!!
ffs are they MENTAL!

for the same job, makes you wonder sometimes!?? Anyway its a decent job he did and for no extra cost he repaired my back bumper where it had scraped a kerb. Now to give the bill to the little boys mammy (little fella cycled into my car on one of those bloody pedal go karts with the big wheels)

Thanks for advice lads!
