Panda (Classic) My Purple Panda Parade Progress log

Introduction

Well folks, after keeping it under my hat all week (to avoid any embarrassment if the ebay winner actually collected the car) I have bought the purple panda parade from another user on here, neeny. They had sold it on ebay, and to cut a long story short the winner of the auction didn't collect, so the transaction was cancelled, and I offered to buy it in his place (I had actually nearly bid on the car on the original run but I confused myself and thought it was LHD which wouldn't have been any good to me) So I made the trip to fife (and on the way crossed the forth road bridge and saw the forth rail bridge which is a bit of an ambition of mine) and collected it. It took some getting used to driving! My current daily is a Citroen C2 GT, and the two cars are very very different. I have prior experience driving Fiats, as my first 3 cars were a mix of mk1 and mk2a puntos, and the first car I ever drove was my dad's tipo.

Anyway I digress, I drove it home in blizzard conditions and am very impressed with it! The only thing is that it has sat for a while and the brakes are very spongy (not a criticism of the previous owners, they were extremely honest about the car and answered all my questions, they were very kind and nice people and I hope to see them again, perhaps at a show) The Mohair twin sunroofs were slightly damp on the inside (again, not a criticism, it has been extremely wet in Scotland recently, and there is only so much it can take) not leaking or anything, just slightly damp, so I aim to treat this with fabric water repellant. There are some decals and stickers on it which aren't to my personal tastes, so I will remove these, and keep the ones which are to my taste :) The rear sunroof needs a new strap, so I will need to source one of these, or get my fiance to make a new one if I can get a hold of some leather or rubber if I find they are unavailable :)

I am very pleased with my new purchase, and consider myself very lucky to have managed to get it, the buyer on ebay should be kicking himself! And also I am very lucky to have met such kind people as Janine and Stewart, and to have found a forum with such helpful people. Anyway folks lets get down to business...photos! I apologize for the poor quality of some of these photos, it was dark before I took some of these and it is very cold so my hand was shaking. Hopefully you join me on my journey folks :) The panda is currently in my garage being aired out in an attempt to part dry the sunroofs before I bust out the hairdryer tomorrow :)

Checked at lunchtime there and the leak is still present, though doesnt appear to be nearly as bad as it was before. Still cant tell where it is coming from, though I will get a better look later on as I suspect it is from behind the timing belt cover.

There also appears to be a small coolant leak too now

I took the cigarette lighter out of a punto that is in my driveway before it heads to the scrappers/sold whatever my dad decides to do with it, dont know if this is original equipment, and I dont smoke, but it might come in useful sometime. Also the sticker I ordered from partsworld turned out to be 5 stickers! So anyone else needing an unleaded fuel sticker just pm me :) Also included is a picture of my engine bay, I like the look of it with a timing belt cover on. Still no timing belt cover bracket though :(

I thought there was a metal part that the timing belt cover bolts onto? I cant figure it out by looking at the pic on my phone :(
There have been a few designs. Think originally yours would have had the 2 piece like this (top section missing here) with a hinged flap(s) securing with the 2 bolts you can see at the very edge of the block just below the centre line of the exhaust port and at the top edge of the photo, tucked under the end of the cam cover. The one I linked to is the older one piece design securing with just the one bolt at the top, but should be interchangeable.

I've sen a few different ones....I think the new one I have on the bianca (with flap) would fit yours and the one you have will fit mine...be good to check and maybe swap.

It's certainly an option, however mine is broken at the rear bolt hole, and is held on with a bigger washer sandwhiching it on. Would be an unfair swap, and not up to the concours standard of your bianca in my humble opinion. though perhaps you could show me a photo of it fitted so I could compare if you would be so kind?

The cars with Vern...as soon as its back I will sort it out.

An interesting day for me so far, changed the spark plugs and put the unleaded fuel decal back on to see how it looks (I like it this time round, dont know why) might change my mind about it though. I then went to TMS to pick up crankshaft and camshaft oil seals (going by the prices I was quoted I would be better buying these now before they go up in price again) and the chap on the desk asked if I wanted to take place in "the challenge" I replied yes then enquired what it was (that probably tells a lot about me) and basically they have a top gear style time board and I had to take a pushbike out round the industrial estate and back. I came in last place but we had a good laugh about it :) I then got discount on my oil seals and a free can of juice, and was the first customer to take part! :) :ROFLMAO:

Its far from perfect, and I think that the paint is too old to be as good a match now, or perhaps the existing paint is faded (I painted with it a year ago and it was fine then on the inside of the door) But I have painted the bit of rust under the tailgate that I had treated with Kurust, its not perfect but certainly better than rust, and better than unprotected! So I am happy enough with this:

Thanks to aquamarine fantastic instructions I changed my ignition barrel today, was very very easy thanks to him :) I confused myself a couple of times along the way, especially when I was looking for the "hidden" spring release :ROFLMAO: just about every job I have done on this car has been easy, with the only difficult parts coming from me thinking its going to be more difficult than it is :) So now I am back to working from two keys :)

I also set up a tent I haven't used for 8 years in my garden to make sure it still works with panda camp coming up :), and I am happy to say it does :) It was wierd to think that the last time I was in it I was 18, so much has changed since then, I am glad to say for the better :)
