Went with friends yesterday to pick up a Trabant 601 "Special" from Chicester. Drove down at 75 with two other fat blokes in the Panda, one throwing empties, half eaten pies and insults at "Those F--cking English bast---!" The other making faces at kids in passing cars, till said kids pulled faces back, then got a smack from mom for pulling faces at strange men in passing pandas.
Anyhow, got to the car, learnt to drive it (2 stroke, no torque, column shift like a 2CV, no engine braking) and set off. It used 35 litres of 50:1 mixed petrol- the panda used maybe 15 of its LRP. It chugged along at 80kph/50mph, and could be got to 120 kph, on the flat, after about a minute. Any hint of an incline and it was back to 50. It does go round corners, as long as you think about them beforehand. The brakes actually seemed pretty good. The throttle is a little pedal, in about the middle of the car, which means your front passenger can kick it, stomp on your foot etc...there is no prop shaft tunnel up the middle of the car.
Leaving at 5pm, we got back to Merthyr at 11pm, smelling of two stroke...and all this on a car still registered in the DDR!
