Alright Bahney mate after seeing that sweet tranformation of the brakes ive decided i must do it aswell to my 1.8 hlx ive been on motorsportworld and got prices for rear coupe disks rear coupe pads the brake fluid i will get from wherever i get to fit everything but im not knowledgable with things like this obviously il need calipers aswell do you know if they are 4pot or something like that. also do you think that my garage will be able to supply the brake cable handbrake cable and hoses do they all need to be coupe bits. any help please mate cheers Danny.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: My car is in the garage

you will be better off getting the rear brake disks/pads/calipers from a broken up coupe mate, try your brakers yards or try a websitre i sometimes use http://www.247spares.com/ for sourceing parts.

all i did was buy the complete unit rear springs as well and took them to my garage, the garage bought new coupe disks (only wanted standard) i bought the ebc rear brake pads from www.needforspeed.co.uk and took them in as well, then it was just new brake hoses and a new handbrake cable. not a job i would recomend doing yourself, it is brakes afterall.

i have loads of mods planned :) i have recently speant around 3k on car bits and bobs and i have been driving round today getting quotes from bodyshops for fitting my body kit :)

so watch this space...should all be finished by march hopefully

yeah paul u was unlucky mate with the rear disks if it helps they needed a lot of prep work to get them looking like they do, the calipers were rusted in parts and needed sanding down and then painting of course the disks were worn and the pads were on about 10% if you were lucky you could get calipers of a coupe that has just been broken up and it will have decent disks and pads for you to use that would save some cash.

why did you do the rear disk conversion anyways. Did you put a bigger engine in or was it just because it would look a lot cooler??

cheers bahney mate i was chatting to Tom about it earlier and he said that i would need the rear hub so to get the rear suspension what exactly do i ask for as i really want to get it done. so does the rear suspension fit in the place of the old one or am i only after the bits. cheers mate.

"why did you do the rear disk conversion anyways. Did you put a bigger engine in or was it just because it would look a lot cooler??"

2 reasons really, my old drums were rusted and crappy and looked dreadfull so the look of disks on the back appealed to me especially with the alloys as well.

2nd reason was when i had my mot last year one of the things they flagged up as "dodgy" was one of my rear drums was so badly rusted that it would proabibly be a failure next mot time, i asked how much a new drum with fitting etc would cost and i was told £50 or therea bouts so i considered the option of 1 brand new drum which would look crap with a rusty one opposite so i decided for the rear disk conversion and just by coincidence 2 weeks later ribzz was selling some calipers from a coupe.

Re: Re: Re: My car is in the garage (2nd stage of my plan is nearly done)

was it just the calipers you got mate did you not need the rear hubs.

Re: Re: Re: Re: My car is in the garage (2nd stage of my plan is nearly done)

basicially mate if u call a scrappy and tell them u are after some coupe rear brakes say that u want the hub/disks/caliper etc you will get the whole lot in 1 hard to carry package (heavy) might even have the rear suspension springs depending on if they could be bothered to remove them.

where in the country are u ?

if u areanywhere near yorkshire i recomend the garage i went to (mentioned above) because they have done it once now i am sure they will find it a lot easier next time. or just ring a local fiat garage (not main dealer) and pick there brain about it, they will tell you everything u need and advise you well.

one thing i slipped up on was on the coupe 20V turbo there are 2 sets of pads there is one with a step and one without, it is imposable to tell unless you have the pads that came of the coupe calipers, now i never knew this so i just went out and boutht eh ones without the step...yep u guessed it..wrong ones, i needed the ones with a step, so i had to get them pronto so the garage can fit them.

bahney...

a lot of people have said that the brakes on the the 1.4 aren't brilliant, so yet another reason to fit the rear discs...

i was just wondering out of general interest have you noticed much of a difference in the braking?

Re: bahney...

"the most dramatic thing though is my brakes ! jesus christ i nearly went through the windscreen when i braked the first time, featherlight touch is all that is needed, they are sublime they really are."

as i posted above i am extatic about the brakes :) they are brilliant, i had the front disks replaces as well because they were worn and the brakeing i would say is easily 40% better which sounds like a lot but i am judgeing by the fact i would have to press my brake pedal 2inches before i started brakeing (before the swop) and now i sliply touch the brakes and it is instant, 2inches is like a emergency stop, lol

dont know if it is just the rear disks of a combination of me haveing poor brakes in the first place but i am very happy with them.

Re: Re: bahney...

Any improvement in braking power will be due to the new brakes being set up better. The rear brakes do less than 30% of the work when slowing your car down, so to see a 40% improvement your brakes would have had to be **** to start with. Drum brakes do need adjusting sometimes, otherwise the first couple of inches of brake pedal travel wont do anything, and thats probably why the new brakes feel so much better.

Anyway, you are obviously happy with your mod and im sure it looks great, especially with alloys on.

I just posted this message so that people dont think "oooh i can get 40% better brakes with this mod", - you cant. If your brakes are set up well to start with, this mod might make your brakes 2-3% better.

Keep up the good work
Jonathan
