what are you using to convert the cd to mp3? Dont bother with the ipod software.

i recomend using EAC to rip the CD to the computer, http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

that'll make rather large files, so then u compress them using razorlame, http://www.dors.de/razorlame/download.php

if its suddenly started going slowly, you might have a problem with ur ASPI layer, this program will tell u if you have

if there is a problem, look on here and you should be ok: http://aspi.radified.com/

hope this helps

Depending on the software you are using audio conversion can use a fair amount of CPU, it shouldn't be a problem on most modern hardware, but if you have a lot of other programs running, even background applications, it will take longer.

Either way, even with a relatively old piece of kit you should be able to convert audio in real time, so an average CD would take about 45 minutes to convert and burning time would obviously depend on the speed of your CD/DVD writer. Modern P4's over 2Gigs should be able to convert a CD in a few minutes.
