My wife unknowingly had a disagreement with a bump in a farm track & in the process took a 10p size chunk out the bottom of the sump

Oil all over the road a 'Engine oil pressure low, switch off engine" message on the dash. The engine was switched off almost immediately & Mr RAC man towed the car home.

We paid for the sump to be Ali-welded & refitted at a reputable garage. It now runs perfectly, just as it was previously, except...

...when accelerating in any gear, you feel the turbo kicking in, but also notice a strange "wurrrrrrrrrrring" noise. Sorry, crap description I know, but it's how it sounds! :)

e.g. 1st gear, pulling away, all sounds OK, get to approx 2000rpm, boost kicks in, but so does the "wurrrrrring". It also does it in other gears. Constant speed (i.e. seemingly when turbo not on boost) I can't notice the noise.

As I say, the car's running perfectly, except this noise. It's personally more of a slight annoyance to us, as we knew it didn't have any noises before the sump mishap.

We put it back in the garage today, they said they'd found the fault (Heatshield loose & vibrating on the exhaust), but no sooner than half way home, I pulled out of a junction &.....the wurrrrring was back again :(

Anyone ever experienced the dreaded sump damage in a multi, or have a clue whether this sort of thing could cause an issue with the turbo? As I say, it seems to be working perfectly, but i have that niggly doubt now. We love our multi to bits though.

Maybe I have to take it to a dreaded Fiat dealer (nearest one to here is Crawley, Surrey)

have had 2 new sumps fitted (used to live down a really bad track) but no problems to report

Well Doogie, has anything else been `left loose`? a lot of `dynamics` come into being under acceleration! - engine mounting? sump baffle? I have heard of a weld repair being `hit` by recirculating big ends, have a listen to see if it does it on stationary reving? - if not it could be a worn/loose engine mounting, but this may be a bugger to find! Ruggero.

I know this an old post but exactly the same 10p size hole appeared i our Multipla JTD sump a couple of weeks ago, the sump plug was unknowingly removed when travelling, we had a 30mm diameter by 20mm long piece of alluminium bar welded in and tapped with a thread to take a sump plug - plus we also have an unusual noise as described now present, is this a common problem ?

I think any loss of oil whilst under load will mean new bottom end bearings, you could be really lucky but doubt it tbh sorry if its not what you want to hear.

Luckily ours was fine and a year later is still running great,

Hi Guys,
Totally forgot to let you know the outcome of what happened after the missus' off-roading adventure :)
Well, the weird noise continued for approx 9 months, until I accelerated away from a roundabout one wet, wintery evening....and then it sounded like someone let a bag of nuts & bolts drop through my engine bay.
Twas the turbo, as dead as a doo-doo
£500 later (for a brand new Garrett unit from an independant turbo retailer) & it's been running perfectly ever since....
Bought mint with 32K on the clock, 35K when the missus took it 'off road' & a few years later now has 110K on it, scrapes & scratches thanks to fellow SuperMarket shoppers, but we still love it. It just keeps on going & going :)
Some people might think I'm mad, but considering the abuse our cars had over the years of ownership, i'm even considering getting rid of my own Alfa 159 Sportwagon & trading it for a newer multipla :)
Thanks for all your replies, it really has been much appreciated
Take care,
Doogie
