Stu, if someone says they earn 36k a year then just say you earn 50 or something. I myself earn a 100k and get my kicks out of dealing with dozey 500 drivers on the internet. True story :D

how do the students contribute towards the government? they don't.

And what happens when the students graduate? The loans get paid back. It's not a grant.

It's a similar thing to a student having a free state education. An education provided (in part at least) by the taxpayer which is then reciprocated when said student becomes a taxpayer themselves.

part of it is a interest free loan and part of it is a grant.

Perhaps you should educate yourself before talking about things which you don't fully understand. A standard student loan has no grant component. The interest rate on a student loan only changes once per tax year.

how have you gotten that from me.. a contributing, taxpaying member of society, who gets a daft student card to pay £1 into a club at the weekend rather than £5.

i mean come on.. i know it's not strictly 'right' but i'm hardley the biggest sponger in the world!

You're whinging about them taking from the system when the net effect of people going to university is positive.

But what do I know? I've only been doing the job 25 years, I left school with 8 O levels and 8 A levels whereas my manager left uni with a degree in something simple & whos idea of dealing with staff issues is to have a slanging match with said staff out in front of all the other staff. the original idiot savant.

Is that a typo? You're the first person I've heard of to have 8 A Levels.

Well everyone I know who goes to uni which is at least half my mates get a grant and a loan combo, same with the majority of students so maybe you should educate yourself.

Chaos, In the dark ages, the number of A levels we were allowed to study was based on the number of O level passes (and grades).
I think the average these days is 3 or 4 but, again, if 'they' feel you can cope then you can do as many as you like.
I've heard of students taking 20-odd
