We have already had a poll for the most unreliable, so why not the most reliable. The general consensus seems to be Japanese for unbreakable engines and german for build quality, but what do you think?

Yeah, I agree with Liam, the Japanese have an uncanny ability to build stuff very very well, and at a competitive price.

The Germans make some bullet-proof stuff, but its bloody expensive!!
But Reliability issues are always due to the following:

How "enthusiastically" the car is driven,
What fuel is used / any additives (Eg: using 95 RON in a 98RON engine will hurt it)
Enviroment conditions
Service intervals and correct maintenence

A 4-stroke is a 4-stroke, the cycle is the same for any 4-stroke. Only its efficiency can change, and thats due to better design. :D

I totally agree - someone I know has a Honda NSX and it has been bullet proof from day one, owned since new, for the past 9 years - such a useable supercar. If they can make supercas this good and reliable it speaks volumes for the rest of the honda range!!

I spent 13 years selling cars in my 'previous liife' (got out 2 years ago, what a sentence, people do less for murder.....).

Anyway, my rough guide on reliability/quality based on PERSONAL EXPERIENCE is this:

1st: Honda & Mazda (nobody else comes close)
2nd: Toyota, Mitsubishi, Subaru
3rd: Hyundai and some other Korean-built cars
4rd: Best of European cars (VW, Skoda, Audi, BMW & Mercedes
5th: Rest of European cars (incl Ford, GM, French, Italian)
6th: Nissan (we referred to them as Japanese Fiats, mostly utter ****e)
7th: American cars

No statistics and much of this may be questioned but his is how I found it. And what have I spent my well-earned on? An Alfa 156 and a Fiat Cinquecento, though I am about to add a Skoda Fabia to try to inprove the 'problem ratio'. At least it'll give me something that works while the other two are being repaired!

Skodas are very reliable both motors in the top ten most reliable cars in the top gear survey... great cars good choice!

Not convinced about Japanese cars, my Grandad bought a brand new Avensis (yes the new one that looks like a tank) this year and it's already broken down at the roadside twice.

What about Subaru? My partner has run Legacys for years without any problems. Her latest, a 2.5 estate, she's had for 4 years, from new and it's never missed a beat, no teething troubles, nothing.
I've got a Daihatsu Fourtrak, 2.8 TDX and that is also bullet proof.
The old Panda, still a simple reliable runaround, keeps going but does need regular care to keep it that way.

my familiys most reliable car (meaning the one that broke down least, and lasted longest!!) was a Triumph Accliam :yuck:

that beats even the cinq, a golf and a passat :D

Going by cars i've owned it has to be my Ford focus..had it from new for nearly 3 years and not one thing needed doing to it.. apart from when some mug scraped the side with a van..twice

Only ever had niggly faults with Fiats here, and had a list of them, the punto doesnt count, that was used, abused and only had one service in about 20k miles (my dad being tight). eventualy traded it in for the stilo (which im forcing them to service), due to the lower end knocking.

Before the brava, I had a rover 214 (rover K) which had a buggered bottom end due to cam belt slipping (which had been replaced 8 months before and stealer not claiming responibility, and I cancelled my ZS order for that)

Last a lifetime.. or Tonka.

Funny that, every time I mention how destructive my kids are to my mum, she reminds me of when I was a kid and she bought me a, so called indestructable Tonka car and I had destroyed it within 15 minutes. Haven't even been able to do that to my Fiat.
