right thought i had my rear brake issues all sorted, untill i took my wife to work when i got home the driver side was red hot and stank of brake dust, im assumng that they are over adjusted and are 2 tight against the drum.

do i just take off the drum and fully wind the adjuster in as im sure i never turned the adjuster in and left it fully open.

im hoping this is the problem thats also messing with the hand brake.

thought it was just hoping someone would say dif thats all, do i just wind both sides all the way in then put drums on and pump break pedal a few times? might get there eventually

Im not 100% on it ill dig out a little cd ive got and see if its self adjusting like you say in your other post but sounds like its either stuck or needs backing off, the problem is when you take the slack up from the handbrake end it just pulls the rears equally so if one is a bit out it can cause problems .
Did you fit new drums ? if not did they have much of a lip on the inner edge or did you grind it off as if its sitting on a lip it would give the same issues but would eventually wear the pad in the area giving you normal braking again.

to be honest i never looked for a lip but dont think there was as i had it in my hand for a few mins talkin to someone,

will try unwinding both sides tomorro and see if i can get them going.

also when i went back out i slackened off the handbrake cable and the brakes didnt appear to stick. when i got home the hub was cold to touch and not boiling like b4 so assuming it was the handbrake thats the prob

cheers mate gonna look at the car myself and try stripping the brakes back down see if i can sort it out cant bloody re test it till i get them fixed tho

I adjusted the adjuster screw, put the drum on and the wheel, turned the wheel with average force for a second. I adjusted the screw until I was only able to go one full turn with my hand.

Trial and error, just passed my MOT and brake force was even on the rear.

right finally managed to get my brakes sorted i think

1st undone handbrake
took both drums off
opened up the self adjuster as far as i could go
tried drums but too tight
unwound the self adjuster till the drums went on but a tight fit
put everything back together

then i pulled the handbrake up 3 notches ( it was real tight at its slackest setting under the gaiter )
pumped brake pedal 5 or 6 times and hey presto brakes seem as good as they ever been

is there anyway to check if there even b4 the retest

right thought i had my rear brakes set up great, they are super sharp and havent had brakes like this on any car for years, hand brake works a treat only snag is the rear shoes are still too tight as when i drive for any distance u can smell brake dust should i just continue to drive and let them wear down so that they aint rubbing???

Are you sure it's not the cables? they swell up inside the rubber cover and can stick. my 03 with discs on the back is onto it's 4th set of cables. Mine would stick on and eventually seize the caliper.

Not sure about the models with drums but the cables for the caliper equiped cars would be about £30 for the pair.

I agree about the cables. I put a new set on after they froze in the winter, about February time. I had problems with one side sticking and burning up and after some head scratching and mucking around with the adjusters I eventually found out it was the new cables, the seals had gone in only 4 months. The cables were full of rusty water and not releasing properly. I had bought the cables from shop4parts but they were not genuine Fiat ones. I changed both of them just a few weeks ago with genuine Fiat ones which I couldn't believe were cheaper! The difference in quality between the Fiat parts and the pattern ones is huge, much better rubber seals and fit. Bear in mind the originals lasted over 4 years so I hope the new ones last the same time. I have also carried out the deflector plate mod that is on the Multipla owners site. I would have a good look at the cables, very easy to remove. Good luck.

Yes I agree with Equaliser & would vote for the cables binding especially as you removed and replaced the drums without any undue reported effort
