General Mongolia ralliers please read

Afternoon all.

I'm doing the Mongol next year and in looking at cars, we did admittedly have a Panda 4x4 on our list of candidates to get us to UB. Sorry about that! And as part of this, I'd been reading the forums for research purposes.

But, having seen your concern for the little fellas in this thread, I thought you'd all like to know that starting with next years run (2009), the rally will have a new rule in place. All cars that are to be sold & remain in Mongolia need to be less than 10 years old.

(I'd post the URL, but it won't let me! So here's the text....)

We've been working closely with the Mongolian Government for many years we have a great relationship with them. This year they have decided that all cars given to charity in Mongolia have to be younger the 10 years old. This means that the cars have a higher value for the charity sale and that they are better for the environment. Which is fair enough.

We understand that this is a bit of a change but we need to work with the authorities and support their decisions. Many teams in the past have been bringing cars of this age already so as long as it's under 1 litre the adventure remains!

We have done some hunting online and it is quite possible to pick up cars under 10 years for less than £400, so the cost is not huge.

There is a small chance that over the coming year this rule may change to allow older machines in but for now that is where she stands. Since you have a whole year to prepare and teams have done it in 1 week before there is no rush to go out hunting for your stead just yet.

However, you can still bring an older car if you are not going to donate it to charity or leave it in Mongolia. We will provide storage in Ulaanbaatar and border permissions but you will need to get your machine back home and out of Mongolia after the Rally. You may well have to pay a larger vehicle deposit to cover this. It's possible to drive back through Russia in around 9 days on pretty normal roads (so you should actually make it!) and it is also perfectly possible (though not always very cheap) to ship the cars back to the UK.
So to clarify the cars need to be younger than 10 years old at the date of import and we are stating that this will need to be mid December 2009.

I'm sure the old Pandas stopped being made in about 96/97? So I s'pose this now rules 'em out for the majority of Mongol entrants.

I'm nowt to do with the rally other than I have a place for next year. Just thought you'd like to know this info. ;)

I'm thinking of entering the mongol rally, my choice of vehicle may be a little over the 1.0L rule but I think it will come in handy for the return journey.

What do you think?

Thank god! :slayer:

Little pandas everywhere have a sigh of relief! :D

Well, Pandas were sold until 2003 in mainland. (I'm not if the 4x4 is under 1.0L though)

After a search in the facebook i saw that there are a lot of Panda groups and the mongol rally teams are almost everywere:mad: and Pandas are still going:cry:.

A general question:
Is Mongolia world's car cemetery? Vast steppe to fill with our old and soon out of the road cars? :nutter:

there are a lot to say but I stop now....
:mad::mad:

Evening all.

I posted a while back about the Pandas no longer being eligible for the rally. Well, whilst having a butchers on the Mongol Rally Site today, it seems not all Pandas go to thier doom.
