OK!!

Today while removing my rear discs and hubs for a good clean and service i had a thought and a question to ask.

Can someone more educated in the field of mechanics or knowledge of vehicles please tell me if it is possible to upgrade the front or rear wheel bearing hubs from that of a Barchetta to something of another vehicle, fiat or whatever.

say for example,

the rear wheel hub of the B with bearing has an inner width of 30mm which i belive to be the axle width, correct me if i,m wrong, and a pitch of 4x98. and uses a 240x11x39.5 disc and apropriate caliper

The rear of the new Grand punto is still 30mm but the pitch is 4x100. and uses a similar only larger disc and caliper

Now what i,m thinking and why is that on my particular Barchetta i,m running 4x100 17" wheels and have to use wobbly bolts, also another reason is maybe to be able to upgrade the disc size of the rears as the grand punto uses a disc size of 264x10x41 quite similar to that of the B only larger.

heres some links,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as i do need to replace mine and an upgrade would be better if possible.

i ask once fiat doctor about this because, threads are quite bad... so he told me that will fit all fiat, lancia, alfa that have 4x98 but must check if have ABS or not.

I went to the local fiat dealership and had a chat with the saleman today,

We compared the hub/bearing of that of the B to that of a Grand punto.

They are very simmilar in dimensions and i believe the punto hub would fit a barchetta rear axle , enabaling the 4x100 pitch upgrade but the only difference was the way the ABS sensor works.

The B's hub has a toothed ring which somehow controls the ABS sensor and the Grand punto's is purely round but most probally works magneticly.

Heres some pics for comparison.

Does anyone know if it is it posible to remove the toothed rimmed ring as on some vehicles you can.

with "variable bolts" you can put 4x100 alloys to 4x98 hub. but not sure if opposite also works.

Hiya, Doc,

The Kahn wheels i have used are 4x100 but the rear inner centre hub is 72mm
VW/german spec larger than the Fiat 59mm so i have to use those spigot type ring hub adaptors ontop of my regular 59mm hubcentric spacers.

There is no problem with me doing this and along with my spacers but i thought if while they are all dismantled if it was a simple bolt on mod upgrade to the correct pitch 4x100 wheels i use. WHY NOT!!

Talking with Mike my nephew mechanic, he told me that some model cars the cog toothed ring for the ABS senser can be removed. I,m not sure if this is the case with the Barchetta,

I,ll have to have a look, but i,m not close to the B and Mike only gets to have some spare time when he can in his busy schedule to work on her.

The Idea Pete mentioned about remilling the original 4x98 pitch sounds good but i,m not sure if thats possible due to having to use thicker wheel bolts to compensate.

Id imagine i would have to have 4 complete new holes drilled into the existing hub then 4x100 is viable aloowing the ABS sensor to work as it should and then allowing an upgrade to any larger disc size and caliper.

UHM!!

Seems that there are two wheel hub bearing listed for the Barchetta,
one with a toothed ring bearing for ABS as is mine and another with the same look as the new Grand Punto listed as fitted with new ASB bearing and is also listed for many other models.

Here is a link,

or

and this is the one i have on mine at present,

SO!! Can anyone tell me what is the difference and how does this system work, and also! is it posible for me to upgrade to the new bearings , id imagine there must have been an improovement in design, but guess i,d have to change the ABS or ASB sending unit too.

Is this possible ?

The ones without the toothed rings have magnetised parts which are picked up by different types of sensor:

Hiya, Pete,:)

Thanks! Yes, I found this out today..

The link you posted confirms the new bearing ABS sensor works better,
Obviously its a more modern aproach and technology and makes me now wonder whether I could upgrade the bearings and the sensors on my B or would the sensors only be compatable with their own ABS wiring systems.

If i remember rightly, mine is the bosch system. :)

Check the size of the inner hub that goes into the alloy. I have Grand Punto wheels on my B on 4x100 and I use wobbly bolts as well. I had to have the middle centre of the alloy opened up by 2mm to get them on my B.

Hiya! Doc,

Ive discovered that the new Grand Punto rear hubs use the new style ASB bearings which are also found and used on newer model Barchetta's, the only difference is the pitch.

Its to do with the ABS systems, the new ones are accurate down to 0mph wereas the old style toothed hubs may not be so accurate in reading sensing the wheels speed.

NOW! heres my thinking.!
If your Barchetta is already equiped with the new style magnetic bearings then you must be using the new style ABS system and could easily upgrade your hubs to the new 4x100 Grand Punto. They should fit perfectly !! :) and may even give you a few milimeters extra width track.. No more wobblys and a perfect fit for your Grand Punto wheels.

OOPS!! just seen you modded your wheels, but i guess you could still use spigot rings..
