I know this is an old thread, but still relevant to many users.
A cheap fix is to use two cable ties around the weak joint. Fit them so they cross over each other. Difficult to describe but easy to do. And this needn't be seen as a temporary job. I've fixed a similar joint on a Peugeot gear linkage (at the base of the lever) and it's lasted at least a couple of years.
Three cheers for cable ties, one of the best inventions of the last 50 years. If in doubt, think cable tie.
