After some help. I bought a Mk2 51 plate Punto (1.2) in November as a 'tie me over car' while waiting for my new one. When I bought it, there was a slight oil leak that was identified as the rocket gasket. Bought the gasket and was going to fit it myself but following a bearing problem that I needed to sort, I decided to let a local specialist deal with that at the same time. Problem solved.

When I bought the car, my boss had mentioned he wanted to buy it off me when I sell it on for his daughter. Fair enough. We spoke last week to finalise arrangements, and he asked if it had been serviced, to which I said its doubtful, so he stated he'd have an oil and filter change then not worry till the MOT was due in October. Given I'd got access to the specialist (who I find as really good, and has a good reputation) I said I could do this for him as it would be cheaper (no specialists nearby his location). Had this done on Thursday. Frustratingly, by the time I got home, oil was peeing out, and the specialist came down to my house and replaced the oil filter (somehow it had split on the seal). Used the car Friday, and it was fine but when I got back to it after work, a small puddle was on the floor.

Took it back yesterday and he replaced the filter again with a larger one. He'd previously replaced like for like but when looking back up the ramp again, it seemed it didn't fit as well as the later, larger filters. Drove 160 miles yesterday, stopped on the way to check all OK, then parked up at work. 4 hours later, nipped out, no oil on the floor. Happy.

However, went to the car this morning, and sadly, a small patch of oil was on the floor. No oil appeared to be anywhere on the filter. Now the frustration is, I did this as a favour but its caused this problem. Plus I've drove the car down for him and was going to go home by train but don't want to hand the car over as is.

Apologies for the lengthy post, but any ideas what this could be? No oil seems to be evident on the sump either. Anyone had a similar problem following an oil and filter change? The leak is very small, I haven't even seen it drip when stood watching it. And I went back to the car this morning after it was parked up for 2hrs and nothing. So its as though it only happens when its been stood for a good few hours (will be checking again at lunchtime).

Obviously the ideal solution is to take it back to the garage and get him to give it a good check over - but that is problematic in its own right.

Help!

Most likely explanation is that when the filter was leaking , oil got sprayed everywhere and even though the filter is now ok it may take a few days for the sprayed oil to dribble down to the floor. Keep checking.

Ah - fair point, one I'd not considered. Thanks

Who is this "specialist"?

It's a Fiat specialist garage in Sheffield. Well respected and recommended locally and has done stuff on the car previously. I refer to him as specialist just because his specialisation is fiats but does obviously work on other makes.

my theory................
clears throat..............

is it possible that he fitted the wrong filter and damaged the threads to the point the filter is popping off slightly
has he damaged the seal in the oil filter end
is the pressure switch doing the leaking

whatever, it needs fixing soonest

No offense intended , it's just that screwing up the oil filter is a rookie error, not helped by the fact that the car has two different diameter oil filters and different lenghts for good measure. No matter how many I do , I always forget which one I need as soon as I turn my back on the car.

To be fair - the first one fitted was the small type and fitted like for like based on what was on. When back on the ramp yesterday it seemed a little too small diameter wise.

I totally see what you're saying, but I don't think it's that otherwise it would have been the original filter fitted incorrectly if you get me.

Anyway, looks like I may have jumped the gun - the car has been fine today, no leak (hope I'm not tempting fate) so fingers crossed.
