Daughter has this and needed 2 tyres so like you do i did a tyre search using the reg number it came up with 186/60 R14 so found some and ordered some.

On looking at the car today its got 165/70 R14 on the rear and 175/65 R14 on the front. Will there be problems getting the 185's fitted to the 14" standard alloys?

Thanks

Early Mk2 active sports have 165/70r14 tyres on steel wheels;
Later Mk2 Active sports have 185/60r14 tyres on alloy wheels - this is what is on mine (2003 model).
if yours has alloys then the 185 tyres will be ok (this is the correct size), someone has fitted the wrong size tyres in the past.

Will there be problems ...

Just out of interest – what brand/model tyres are fitted where?

I don’t recall now what tyre size options are given in the OH. But guess that the standard Mk2 tyre is the 165/70R14. It may be that the previous owner preferred 175/65R14 – as that size is very common, & can give a saving of (say) £5 to £10 a tyre.

`Normally’ new tyres go on the rear – so presumably your lass will be running the remaining part-worn tyres on the front. I’ve run on different (front & rear) sizes myself – but importantly, both sizes were shown in the OH as `within spec’ for my version. Perhaps best to avoid a scenario where your lass has a `disappointing incident’ & then can’t show evidence to the insurance assessor (or whoever) that the tyres were `within spec.’

Have a look in OH - & maybe take further advice. I'm not sure what would happen in (say) bad conditions with some sharp stopping narrow tyres on the front with some cheap import wide surfboards on the rear.

Since the /60 profile tyres are typically more expensive than /65 and /70 profile, I suspect the previous owner just cheaped-out and bought whatever size was the cheapest within spec. If this is the case, chances are that they are el-cheapo tyres anyway. I would get 4 new mid-range tyres in 185/60 R14, something like Avon ZV3s, costing only £187.20 for all four, fully fitted.

If the previous owner has been cheap, check that they haven't been cheap on regular service items too.

Hi, just ordered 2 tyres for our 52 plate active sport 8v and was toms it should have 185 60 14, that was on mytyres. Looking at the car it has 165 70 14 on steel wheels.

Will the 185 60's be ok to use on steels?

Right
under the versions stated in mk2b manual

1.2 8v power steering
1.2 16v
1.4 16v Without ESP
1.3 Multijet (diesel) without ESP can use the following

5 1/2J 14inch, 35mm offset - use 165/70/14 81T
6J 14inch 35mm Offset (Alloy) - USe 185/60/14 82H
6J 15inch 33mm Offset (Alloy) - Use 185/55/15 82V

Now to find my mk2 one and see what that says

Ziggy

I guess it depends how wide the steel wheels are, am guessing 165 70 14 tyres may not fit on alloys but 185 60 14 may just fit on steels? Or may just not fit.

165 on the alloys would overstretch the sidewalls
185 on the steelies would not get the best out of the tyre as the sidewall movement would be restricted

i wouldnt do either for road use
