Punto (Mk1) MK1 Punto - Replace ECU + Code Box

Very useful. Wish I'd seen it before the scrap guy sold me the keys, barrel, and ECU but NOT the code box. You'd think they'd know. He said it would solve the problem. But £75 later the car still wont go.

I assume the code box is not just a passive interface from key ring to ECU but also contains some kind of memory as well and codes.

Just to clarify.. if one were to fit the new ECU, barrel, keys but keep the old code box then trying to start the car would fail? Would it also then "poison" the new ECU by the code box sending some message to it? Could this then be cleared by powering down and wiping the volatile memory of the ECU?

I can't get anyone locally to come out and remove the immobiliser requirement from the ECU... which I guess would solve everything?
I doubt the scrapyard still has the punto they ripped the ecu and keys from.. I could try and get the matching code box... but is the replacement ECU now tainted from the original code box?

Sending the original ECU by post to Nottingham and get it re-written to be free running could be the answer- but that is pretty expensive at £190 especially as we are already £75 in the hole.

trying to start the car with the new ECU and old code box will not be a problem, it just wont work.

When you bought the ECU etc.. did they have it all ready or did they go and remove it from the car? if they removed from the car, ask if they still have it, if not either ask for

A. Replacement of everything
B. Full refund(since they didnt give you the full kit)

£75 is expensive. I went to my local scrappy, got an ECU, Code Box, Key, Ignition Barrel for £15 :slayer:

dont put it back in the same place my ecu filled with water through the wiring loom mounted it between the the heater and glove box with wiring at the bottom so it cant happen again

Hey, do you guys know if I can work my engine using an ECU from a 1997 1242cc 16v Mk1 Punto - and the codebox, aerial and keys from a 1999 8v Punto S?

Also has anybody got any pictures of these items and I'm not entirely sure what they look like.

Hi, just read your post on replacing the ecu which i tried . second car both 1242cc mk1 sporting swapped code box , ECU, and ignition barrel. but it runs badly and backfires . any idea how long the ecu to learn the ropes as it were?

I can program keys to your ECU. CAN DO IT ON MOST FIAT MODELS FROM 94-95 AND 98-99.

All we do is remove the ECU and the boot barrel lock. use the boot lock to cut 2 keys and program them to the ECU. then once attached back to the vehicle they will start the car.

Not if the codebox has failed you can't.

i am having a similair problem with mine. i have a phase 1 1.6 and the immoboliser will not turn off. ive tried the way it says in the manual but the injector light stays on permanently rather than flashing. any ideas what could be wrong with it??? i have the red key but that is making no difference to anything.

Jamie, I think I'm right in saying that as long as the key code light goes out when you turn the key then the problem doesn't sit in you immobiliser. I am suffering the same issue right now, my key code light goes outs but then the injector light stays on (i believe this is right on a 90 Sporting though)

I know this is an old thread,but I had similar problems a year or so back with my Mk1 8V Punto...Turn the key and the code light goes out but the injector light stays on and the car wont start. The fault was sorted by fitting a new crank sensor, £45 I think from FIAT.
