Technical Metallic grinding from front wheels.

Ive got an issue with a metallic rubbing/grinding sound from the front of my tjet.

I first heard it a month or so ago and it was very quiet and only under braking so i put it down to my rear discs which were due for replacing.

I had new discs and pads all round 2 weeks ago for its MOT.

Since then the noise has got worse and is there all the time but gets very loud under braking and turning right.

Ive jacked the car up and rotated the front wheels and i can hear a metallic rubbing sound from both front wheels.

The CV boots look fine with no sign of any leaking and the wheels feel solid when tugged side to side so bearings seem ok.

I have run my hands around the shield at the back of the disc and it doesnt seem to be touching but i cant be sure as ive knackered my locking wheel nut key and am waiting for a replacement to arrive.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what it could be?

I dont have any garages i trust not to rip me off locally anymore so im loathed to take it for a mechanic to look.

any marking on the discs? or check your brake disc shields to check they aren't scraping off the back of the discs? only thing I can think of, I'm having the same problem trying to locate a noise coming from the rear of my grande lol

Would suspect wheel bearing.......had it on two of my cars...noise was different but was a rotational sound. Doubt it will be brakes if pads and discs changed....does caliper work ok?

Brakes work fine and no scoring of the discs.

Ive had both rear bearings done but this noise is very different.

My dad reckons its either bearings or driveshaft related

I was under the impression bearings made a woooom noise rather than a metallic noise, had 4-5 bearings gone between my two grandes.

I have a metallic grinding noise coming from my wheels, a couple of years ago I had it and eventually changing the brake discs for some tapered ones sorted the problem, it only happens when the car has warmed up (when the discs get hot lets say), and it comes and goes then, usually turning the wheel right stops it but not always.

The discs do show signs where they have been rubbing though so not like your problem, but still a pain in the bottom, particularly as it's really loud without the music turned up. I was hoping the noise had buggered off for good when I had the tapered discs fitted but it returned again a couple of months ago.

Had my t-jet 4 years now, think we both purchased ours at similar times Middo, been thinking recently of changing to the most recent facelifted model but there doesn't seem to be a Punto that is as nippy, apart from the Multiair Lounge (135bhp), but I was hoping there'd be one with full leather interior, doesn't appear to be the case, looks like I'm stuck with my t-jet for a bit longer then. It's still a great car, the best I've owned, starting to show a bit of age now though.

Thats exactly what mine is doing!! Its rather annoying and i cant figure out whats causing it.

My brother has an Evo multiair sporting 135. Its pretty much the same as my tjet, i personally wouldnt bother unless upgrading to an Abarth

Yeah, I'd prefer to have a car that doesn't turn heads for the wrong reasons.

Not bothered about the Abarth, don't particularly want anything faster than what I've got was just thinking of replacing for something similar but a lot newer, don't fancy lowering to the slower 105bhp, even though there's a nice one for sale near to me. I also like my 5 doors too, I'm quite a picky sod really.

Just got around to replacing my number plate light, the bulb had gone, got some LED bulbs of ebay, I've changed both bulbs and the only one that works is the one that hadn't blown, bugger. Nothing's ever straight forward is it.

Bend the disc heat shields away from the discs they can get knocked taking the wheels off

Think ive found the cause, the two torx screws that hold the n/s front disc to the hub have sheared off so the disc is able to rotate and wobble against the hub.

Cant believe i didnt notice when i had the wheels off before!

From the look of it it has happened when the brakes were changed as the end of the screw is still bright and fresh.

It will be going back to the garage for them to sort it!

I cleaned my alloys recently, it could possibly be the first time I've given them a proper clean as usually I go for the lazy car wash option and that's about it (que loads of moans and tuts). Since then I've hardly heard the noise, so hoping a really good clean was all that it needed!

Did over 6 hours of driving yesterday and there was just once when I thought it was making an appearance, but it didn't last for long, definitely a big improvement at the moment so feel a bit daft if it's down to a really bad build up of brake dust or something.
