I've centred the clutch plate by eye on the flywheel and the female spline looks pretty much dead central. But the bell housing just does won't go that last inch to snug up against my new engine. I've turned the flywheel slightly to try and give the splines a hand to match up but to no avail. Complicating matters is the additional spline on the driveshaft that goes in at the same time.

Is this a tricky job or am I feeble? If you have any experience can you give me any hints and tips?

Cheers

Hi there Jonti,
Have a look to make sure there isn't a dowel still in the engine block and also one in the gearbox? if thats ok then try turning the drive shaft as your sliding the box in, one more thing did you slide the clutch plate onto the spiget shaft before you fitted the clutch to make sure it fits the splines?

ps has the oil pump arrived yet?

Cheers Trevor.

Cheers alot Trevor

I'll check these out to be sure. G/box didn't want to come off the old engine so I spose was going to be a fight getting it back on. Thinking whether putting g/box and engine on hoist at same time would be easier. Hav briefed girlfriend to look out for oil cooler parcel on Monday, she say ok, woteva...

Re: Mating gearbox to engine - update + question...

The answer is.......Gravity...but what a workout getting the engine on it's side (but on blocks to clear tensioners etc) then gearbox roped up to come down level on top, then drop big heavy thing back to floor right way up !

Do you think torque of 70nm is enough for the bellhousing to engine bolts - I cant find this in the manuals?

Also the driveshaft is split in 3 on the TD , is there any merit whilst its apart in packing more grease in, but if so where should I pack it?

Cheers for any advice you can give

Cheers. I'll get the big wrench out. But I'm wondering whether to split apart again and replace the clutch plate, as I've jus remembered having clutch slip once or twice.

PLS excuse my ignorance, but looking at the plate, can the level of wear be determined? It was shiny, with some score marks. Are the circles inscribed into the plate wear indicators??? or am I talking total

PS when slipped was not contaminated due to oil/fuel leaks, has done max 20k since last changed

Cheers

20 K isn't a lot, but it depends on your driving and where.
Can't advise on centre plate thickness unsighted, but there are normally dust dissipating grooves, so guess or show it to a man who knows.

Clutches slip due to wear or bad adjustment, you've already ruled out contamination.
