Hi, i'm probably being dense (i'm an auto electrician, not a mechanic lol) but I knew my Marea 20v was burning a little oil but I put a stainless exhaust system on the car from the cat back and when I boot it you can really see the smoke bellowing from the back now (the original exhaust pointed to the ground, so the fumes were not visible in the car). It's a 1998 Marea 2.0 20v, not sure if its a 147 or a 155, yet to find that out. Any pointers on how to find that out too?

How may miles per litre of oil does the car cover? Usually to be seen in the mirror it's pretty grim, like 200 miles per litre. If you are lucky it may be crud burning off from the new exhaust. If it was seriusly smoking I think the direction the pipe points would not stop you seeing it. Do you have a compression tester?

cheers for that, it'll be 147 model then lol. beats my mates 'tuned' astra sport thats been converted to red top power.

errm it covers not many miles per litre, i've seen me put in a litre every week. which is grim lol. i've been told it could be valve stem oil seals, but I don't really want to dive in stripping the head down to find its something deeper routed. The timing belt is due anyway so it may be prudent to investigate when the belts off. why would I need a compression tester? would this tell me something that point to the problem?

once again, cheers fellas!

Valve stem seals would be a puff on start up and when changing gear, when nailing it is more likey rings. A compression test can help confirm this and a competent garage can carry out a leak down test and pinpoint whats going on.

I was changing the air filter the other day and in it there was a puddle of oil in the airbox. I was wondering if its just a clogged breather pipe or something? If it is where abouts are they on my engine so I can take them off and inspect?
